Heavy and slow :)

I use the 147 gr, since there's less muzzle flash. Also, it seems the recoil is less...Not sure why.

Go there, click your state, and find a close range. Find one that offers rentals. Then go there, spent some money (Probably in the range of $100) and try out all the guns that feel good in your hand, and calibers you'd like to try. It's worth spending the $100 now, to find out which guns you like, or don't like. After you find out which caliber gun and make you want, buy it :D

Personally, I prefer my Sig P239, in 9mm. I would advise at getting a 'larger' gun in size, not necessarily in caliber, if you plan on ONLY using it as a home defense. If you plan on getting your CCW licence, then you may want to look for a smaller framed gun.

Whatever you do, don't think that the bigger caliber you get, the easier it will be to deal with a threat. Get a gun in whatever caliber you shoot the best with.

Cool, thanks for all of the replies guys. I found a few ranges near by, so I'm gonna try to head over to one in the next few weeks or so.

I would definitely try to shoot some rentals. I was pretty much set on getting one of the medium sized SIGs in 9mm before I shot a 1911 in 45. While it sounds like it would be brutal to shoot I find it is much more comfortable than 9mm. Is it the perfect first gun for me? I don't know, but I love it and don't have any regrets.

Here's a picture of mine.

the sig 228 is law enforcement / military only and comes in 9mm only.
you probably mean the p229 (i've owned both)

p228
p229

also, to the topic at hand. i'd reccomend anything in the 9mm and above category that is reliable and that you are comfortable with with good hollow point heavy slugs. my personal favorite is the hk usp40.

I have one too. It's the most accurate, best built, smoothest pistol I own. Plus you get seven shots.

I was reading the 'crime watch' in the paper today and it had a article about a local house being robbed at night with the owners at home.

The owner said when he 'racked the slide' on his shotgun upstairs he could hear them running out of the house downstairs.

Get a shotgun, it is the best home protection all around.

No reason I can't own a P228..like this one..but good call on the 9mm only - I didn't realize that. Ah well - have to go with a 229. The USP is a nice gun as well..but I don't like the feel as much as I would like to (I've shot the 9mm USP Compact & .40 USP).

Although there was a Glock 23 for $400 at the local gun store..

Yeah I vote for revolver, I'm not sure if they are easy to clean though but just get a 44 magnum revolver. J/K! I haven't shot alot but I have a glock 17. My choice for home defenese would be shotgun and a .22 for target pratice. 9mm is fun and some what cheap.

<-- clueless

Please keep this on topic as I would prefer not to read posts stating that owning a gun is bad blah blah blah.

Agreed. Do you have kids? If you do, or you're planning to in the near future, for the love of god and your kids, PLEASE don't get a gun.

I have a strong hunch that most folks that dislike guns here are from areas like LA and NYC where guns are considered "evil". They've never used a gun before, never gone hunting or target shooting, and have only seen guns on TV where someone is robbing a 7-11 or shooting gang members and drug dealers with them.

Seriously, guys, you need to get out more.
