So I'm supposed to take 2000 mg of Ibueprofen a day

The limit is 3800mg a day.....My Dr. told me to always take 3 200mg pills whenever I take it since im a bigger guy. 2000mg a day is nothing

I was told that is the limit at which you will get violently ill if you go over......I think that SacrosanctFiend is right about 40mg/kg/day

Actually for ibuprofen to be effective you should take a 800 mg dose.

Its too weak at 400 mg.

That's how they got it to over the counter, they cut the preferred dosage in half.

Doc is correct.

Refer to a drug handbook.
Normal recommended dosage is on the bottle. I've seen it prescribed as 800mg Motrin qid, and 600 mg Motrin qid.
For 3200mg or 2400mg total dosage per day.

yeah, Dr. told me when i take it to take 3-4 pills (200mg each).....smaller people I think 3

I only use Ibuprofen for headaches & 600mg does the job for me... 400mg doesn't do anything at all (I weigh approx 185lbs)

A whole lot of ibuprofen is usually a good alternative to the COX2 inihibitors - Bextra, Vioxx - which I'm sure you know can cause some heart problems. But ibuprofen probably has its own side effects.

which is ulcers. cox2 inhibitors don't cause ulcers. as long as you don't have one or you're not likely to have one taking advil long term works just as well as vioxx for pain relief, and is much less expensive. probably most people that were on vioxx didn't need to be.

To answer the questions:

I'm taking it in addition to physical therapy, splint, ice, stretching, etc for tendonitis in my left hand that just won't seem to go away. I'm not very big (might as well admit it ), ~130 lbs. As I said, I'm not questioning the doctor's suggestion (that's why he's the doctor), it was just kind of surprising.

My doctor told me yesterday to take 3 advil at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and right before I go to sleep for three days. So that's 12 a day. This is because I had a root canal. I was a little worried about it also. But the box says take no more than 6 a day unless prescribed by a doctor. So I figured it would be alright.

I always take 800mg when I need it. They always gave us 800mg pills in the military (no matter what was wrong with you ) so I figured it was fine, and anything less is ineffective.

For some people, they can't deal with the pain w/o a Cox-2 inhibitor. As long as the patient is informed of the side effects, I think that Vioxx, Bextra, etc. should be kept on the market. There are people who need it.

I had severe tendonitis this summer and got prescribed 3200mg daily, 4 doses of 800mg each. That's not more than a normal person can handle, the main issue is stomach irritation. Ibuprofen can cause major stomach trouble if used in larger doses. Always take it with food or milk.

Yep, I was on that for tendonitis also - tore my stomach up though even with the food & milk schtick. They eventually put me on some other anti inflamatory.
