With federal court, such things as prior record, family history & abuse, and all of that carry very little weight.

Sucks he couldn't get a better lawyer.
A close family member got ran up in by the federalies a few years back. Long story short he got popped with crazy weight and got charged with 16 marijuana and extacy trafficing felonies.
Dad got the ex-DA as attorney, he pled to one marijuana charge and served a year and a half in a state work farm.
For a small piece of paper it carries a lot of weight...
