So i'm running 1.81 vcore on my Athlon 3000 on air..

How long before it goes boom? I run at 38c degree idle and it doesnt go above 50. What are the highest vcores people go with on water? If i can get this thing to run 3ghz on water than i'll go for a water setup. I'm at 2.86ghz right now. Huge wall after 2.7ghz. I can get 2.7 on 1.55 volts and maybe even lower. Gotta go up to 1.7 to get 2.8ghz.

I got a 2gb of Crucial Ballistix PC4000

I can either run it at 2.7ghz at DDR 600 or 2.8 ghz with a 9/10 divider, dont know what that equates to. Which would have more performance? The extra 100mhz on the cpu or the little extra memory bandwidth?
 
That's really high. On XS 1.8V and up is usually reserved for LN2 or phase change cooling. Personally I'd lower the voltage, unless you really think 186 MHz is worth killing your chip. Remember, just because your temps are low, there is still a much greater amount of voltage running through your processor, which obviously shortens its life.
 
I bet he will try and RMA when it dies as well. In my estimated timeframe of within a month given the obvious naive decisions he's making.

If you are just making a suicide shot, and expect to buy a new cpu and not try and RMA it great. Give her 2v and try for 3.2GHz for all we care. But if you're not made out of money, and if you were you'd have gone after an Opteron 146 with any amount of research at all, I'd suggest leaving it at 2.7GHz. Stock cooler ?

 
It's nice that your temps are fine but, don't expect to get too much longevity out of that CPU. You're pushing a lot of voltage through it. High volts is what kills the CPU. I'd recommend running that CPU at 1.54V max and take whatever overclock you can get at that voltage. Like Ribbon13 said, expect to start seeing errors and unexplained crashes within a month at those settings.
 
Yeah i started seeing errors so i had to back down. And no its not on stock cooling its on an XP 120. Also if it did die i probably wouldnt even bother to RMA it. I bought this chip right before the operton craze so thats why I didnt get one. I own 2 athlon 3000's and i might sell both of them to get an operton if i can find a stepping i like.
 
Whoa, with 1.81 core, u better be running at least at 3.0 ghz! That is way too much, I'd lower your CPU speed and v core to a reasonable amount. Thats overkill!
 
1.81V on a 90nm A64? :Q (on air, at that)

And I thought I was crazy pushing 1.875V though my Athlon XP...😛 (although it's closer to 1.8V due to my mobo's undervolting)

I just want to clarify, high volts doesn't kill a CPU, heat does. High volts will cause an exponential increase in current though, and since P=V*I, power will increase exponentially with an increase in Voltage on semiconductors.

If you can get the heat away fast enough, then the extra current is no big deal. The problem is you can't get the heat away fast enough. These tiny tiny tiny transistors will heat up and if they get too hot, the transistors will fry.

Even if you are able to dissipate all of the power on the complete CPU, that does not guarantee that the transistors themselves are not near or past their limit individually. A CPU is not a solid block of material, and hot spots do not take long to develop especially now that the die is so small.

I think you are lucky it hasn't quit already, and you should definately turn that voltage down.


 
Holy crap... `You should be doing 1.6V maximum, and that's only if you really want to push it to the limits. I suggest about 1.55V. I've got my 3200+ running @ 2.5ghz on 1.425V
 
Man thats WAY too high, lower it down to around 1.5, oh and on the divider people say that it doesnt affect performance that much if you do run a divider but i am not sure if anyone else knows please share your knowledge
