So I'm purchasing a 2008 G37 coupe

The car is in good condition. 18.5k miles (kind of high) and has Nav/Bluetooth/Premium/sport/technology packages. It's auto though. I drove it and it was nice. Real sport feel to it and has oomphs of power. I've offered him 28k but the seller felt offended. Is 28k a lowball offer? The dude paid close to 45k out the door on the car and I guess he's losing out a lot.
The car is one owner and has a bluebook value of 35k.

Update - Worked it out with the owner. Got 3.99% financing. Will be getting the car next week.

We have one with 19k miles, Sport Coup loaded, sitting at the local Infiniti dealer with a sticker for 28,995. I'd venture to guess I could haggle it down to 26, maybe 25 if I really tried.

If he paid 45k for it new he's retarded and is paying the consequences of not understanding how to haggle in addition to the retardation of buying something new you don't intend to keep forever (new car depreciation the moment you drive off the lot is like, what 15%?)

There are a couple of vehicles that are 28k or so but they lack Nav which I really want. I had one in my Mazda6 and I used it a lot.
I also found another G37 in Southern Cal (manual) with almost the same options. The dealer down there wouldn't budge an inch less than 30k. They also applied some special coating to the car and are asking +630 on top of the 30k.

30k sounds pretty reasonable. Sounds like it he wants to barter. You offer 28k, he wants to hedge his bets, raise the price.

15k off for only 18.5k is pretty...reasonable.

Infinitis seem pretty reliable, but I don't know for certain.

If they installed a clear weather guard liner over the paint, thats their own fucking problem and you should not pay them additional for it. Adding $200 worth of chip resistant film to the paint job does not entitle them to gouge you any further. Don't fall for typical dealer BS. I just bought a 2008 Legacy GT to be my new daily driver and they tried similar shit to me. I ended up making them eat it and got the car for almost 9k under what they were asking.

It's unfortunate but there is always more stupid than thrifty when buying cars so even in troubled times they will gouge you like you can not believe.

Makes sense. I can see how they can trick people into buying options this way. Kind of sleazy in a way.

The guy called and said that he'd accept 28.5. I guess its doable.

I'd suggest counter-offering 28, or say you'll do 28.5 if he pays the bill for a dealer inspection (typically $200 or so but for the Infiniti they may gouge you to hell and back) and they find no major issues.

If he'll take 28500, he'll take 28000.

Precisely what I said above. 28 or 28.5 + inspection and he'll likely take 28, but either way it's a win for you if you feel that price is fair.

Personally, I would have started at 26 and probably ended up with 27.5, though he may not have liked you very much. If he walked, I could always find the same car/mileage for the price I want eventually, I'm the type that doesn't dwell on a sour deal since I know I'll always find what I want for the price I want as long as I don't make concessions for the sake of buying in haste.

I already said yes to him. I had initially offered him 27k yesterday and he didn't want to go lower than 30. I told him my last offer would be 28k. He then called me today saying that he talked with his brother and can't go lower than 28.5k.
I guess, at 28.5 I think its a fair price given the car has all the options Infiniti offers. But I'll still press him to see if he can pay for the service inspection.

Wise decision. I would never, ever, ever buy private party without a dealership inspection. It's like walking in a dark room after breaking a glass. Sure most of it is safe, but odds are equally as high you're gonna get stabbed by glass. Additionally, the inspection may reveal wear and tear or damage that can potentially reduce the price even more, so it's really a win/win for you.

Honestly, I thought $30k was reasonable.

Yeah me too. I don't know, how eager is he to unload his car?

He might just say "fuck off," in which case you just got ripped from an incredibly nice performing sports coupe.

edit: I guess the deal just got finished. Hope everything works out, the G37 is an awesome car. What color is it?

shame about the autostick.

Black in and out.
I'm not worried about the autostick. I guess my SO can drive it now as well. Plus auto transmission cars tend to sell quicker if I needed to sell it.

this thread is going to need pics in under 7 days.

just sayin. 😀 My g35 is (for me) the definition of awesome. youre going to love your g. I have similar features as yours (black/black, coupe, sport pkg, etc). I dont have the navi, but even so, I love it. congrats!

Nice. The seller is now getting upset since I mentioned that we should take the car for an inspection. He says that there are 2 people coming to see the car on sat. Whatever, I get to keep my money. Fuck it.

No inspection, no sale, although this car should have remaining warranty still on it, so you should be looking for signs of accidents and abuse mostly. Every seller has "2 people coming to see the car on sat." It's the oldest cliche in used car sales 😉

Yeah 45k for that is insane. Crazy nuts.

If you offer 28 and he says 28.5, just do it, otherwise he may feel like you're an ass. I felt this way about some people buying my house a few years back. It was already less than neighbors' and if you push a seller too much they will skip reason and just emotionally have a fvck-you about it, so I'd not haggle over $500.

Auto

That car is begging to be manual.
This, unfortunately. Auto is FTL

Haha, I thought he had two other people looking at it? I take it he agreed to the inspection?

Yeps. Sometimes its harder dealing with private party sellers than dealers.
