So, I'm picking up an Acer 22" next week.. What apps should I run to check the LCD?

I used my eyes. My new LCD looked great and everything I did on it looked great...good enough for me!

I'm thinking about picking up the same monitor or the slightly older 2216WD. Did you ever find any info on the differences between the two OP?

Well, contrast has been inproved to 800:1 in the newer version.. besides that they are the same i believe...

Hmm. Wonder if that's a claim by Acer in a false attempt to distinguish the two on something besides HDCP compatability? Contrast ratio seems to be rather ambiguous from a marketing standpoint so Acer probably figured it wasn't that big of deal.

Sorry for the OT.

You are probably right. There is only one 22" panel in existance, so the contrast ratio should be the same.

if you have an nvidia card, the settings panel has some options in there.

i always use dead pixel buddy to check for deal pixels.

oh, and MANUALLY set the brightness.

The 2223 has speakers but other than that I don't know of differences. The increased contrast is interesting but the 2223 says 16.2M colors while the 2216 says 16.7M, so the 2216 may use a better dithering algorithm. I would stick with the tried-and-true 2216. Trust me, whatever contrast difference there is between these two models is not more than it would be going from one 2216 unit to another.

The only test I did on mine, was to open a photo program and did a full screen of red, green, blue, black, and white to make sure all the pixels were working right.

Awesome. Thanks for the info xtknight.

I found out that another improvement is the stand. I think u have more flexibility in adjusting the monitor now.
I'm not sure about 16.2 and 16.7 color difference in the two models. xtknight could be right or wrong. I think there was issue about sites listing them differently before when 2223 model came out also. Like you've mentioned the contrast ratio improvement could be false since they are using the same panel. So, display colors difference could also be wrongly listed too.
Darn it! Im so lost now

Here are sites that lists 2216 as 16.2M. I dont know. 🙁 I think the newer model was for improvement why would they reduce the display colors?

Not sure if this makes any difference to you (since you've ordered already) but if you use a 10% off coupon at Circuitcity.com than the AL2216WBD model comes out to $287 shipped. The 10% off coupons can be had at Fleabay for cheap.

Ah, I wasn't aware that you ordered it. Whatever the case, don't worry about it. There's no difference. You got the extra speakers and the same panel. I would be very surprised if one used a different dithering algorithm but if you wanted me to take the wildest guess that would have been it. I don't even think it's up to Acer anyway since they order the 22" unit as a whole from Chi Mei. Both should use the 16.7M Hi-FRC method which is known for very few artifacts.

Oh, I haven't ordered it yet. I may look into the 10% off coupon at circuit city as Elfear suggested.
I might stop by microcenter to see the monitors in person if they have it in display. Not sure if it's worth extra $30-50 for the newer version. What do u guys think?
