So I'm looking for a new MMO

So I'm in the market, I had FFXI awhile back but it got boring. Basically, I'm looking for a game that's actually fun to play. FFXI you spent so much time just running around (took forever to get places), leveling got slower and slower as time went on...I'm looking for something much faster paced. I've read reviews but most of them aren't very helpful. Any suggestions?

i doubt Vanguard qualifies as "faster paced." it's going to be a tough treadmill, with probably more complicated gameplay itself. also it will be group-based combat.

i'd recommend City of Heroes/City of Villains, or World of Warcraft.

If you like Korean (read: Lineage) style ultra-grind gameplay and open PvP, then you could try the game in my sig. It's free to play and has very decent graphics for a free game. the first 20 or so levels go by very quickly, but the curve rises rapidly.

Have you tried Guild Wars? The expansion Guild Wars Factions is due out at the end of April and it will be playable without owning the original. While some argue that Guild Wars doesn't technically fit the established definition of an MMORPG, it's definitely faster paced.

WoW is the biggest game out there for a reason, it's easy to get into, relatively easy to level and has well-designed, user-friendly gameplay. The end game isn't for everybody, but if you like MMORPGs it's still worth buying and playing for a few months.

EVE Online is a completely different type of MMORPG. It's a scifi/space game that revolves around PvP and player Corporation (guild) wars. There's also mining, crafting, piracy, etc. The players make the "story" rather than following a pre-written quest storyline.

Upcoming games to keep an eye on:

WoW can do a player to cap in a few weeks or less depending on your time

You could also try UO on some free shards, something like UOGamers hybrid which has a player base of around 600-1000 online and fast skill builds which take you less then a couple days to build a character - plenty of other free shards with alternate rule sets as well

Can't think of any others that I've played that don't have a lot of grind in late levels

he wants fast paced action.

CoH/CoV is so boring...and no story whatesoever. the same quests over and over with the same mobs and the same buildings.

eve is also extremely boring doing the same stuff over and over. travel literally takes forever.

WoW. If you are on the anti-bandwagon, I've heard good things about EVE. You could always get in on the ground floor on a new one as well and take your chances.

City of Heroes/Villians DOES offer fast-paced action. If you were unable to find it, you must have been playing without a monitor. Whether you personally enjoy the game, quests, settings or not is a totally seperate issue.

Anyhow... OP, sounds like WoW or CoH would be pretty good choices for you to give a try. Of course there are others you could try. Don't sweat it, just look at what sounds most appealing to you (flip coins to break ties) and get a one-month/trial account and see how it suits you.

What is 'faster paced'? If you're taking 5 days to do a level, but do it all in the same place, then yes, it's boring and slow. But if you're doing those 5 days in different places all the time, it's different. FFXI has such a limited number of areas to level, that you're pretty much leveling in the same place with everybody else, wearing the same armor as everybody else your leveling, and grouping with everybody in your level (post 40, anything more than a 2 level discrepancies kill experience everybody else).

EVE. Since there is no exp or levels, you don't have to worry about that. You could play the game for years and never get all the skills, so the real learning curve is coming into it knowing what you want to do. For fun, I would suggest combat above anything else, and it's fairly simple to map out stats in character creation and base skills.

Skill learning takes real time, and there is no impact on that time from you. In fact, you don't even have to be logged in to learn skills. I'm learning a skill that will raise my intelligence another point right now. This skill takes 6 days to learn, which is based on my stats. Since learning skills, such as stat skills, are based primarily on intelligence, learning this skill will reduce the time needed for all the rest of my learning skills. It's a very, very complex system, but it is not overwhelming.

EVE has the largest game world in existence, and the very best PVP. MMORPG.com gave them 4 awards last year: Best game, Best graphics, Best PVP, and even Best Company. That's how dang good this game is even after 3 years. And yes, it does still look very good. It got best PC graphics the year it came out from Gamespy, I don't know of any other MMO that has done that.

If you have any questions about it, let me know.

A note for the people that need to 'be the best' as far as numbers and stats go. You can't. The only way you will ever get a character with as high skills as someone playing since release is by buying it off them. This doesn't have any serious impact on gameplay (mostly because having skills for other ships doesn't help you fly a particular ship better ), but this is a major issue for some types of gamers.

Basically if you want to 'play to beat the game' you are either going to have to change your goals and outlook or you will almost certainly hate it.

You disqualify vanguard as being too slow paced and nominate a lineage style game instead ?! Egads ;p. As a side note, the grind in FFXI is pretty atrocious, it's entirely possible that Vanguard will be faster paced.

Vanguard is being done by Brad 'corpse decay adds immersion' McQuaid, so it's unlikely to be as casual friendly as WoW, but if the Vanguard release is anywhere near as ruthlessly mind destroyingly grind focused as Lineage 2 I will be astonished.

Eve is without a doubt the worst game I have ever played in my life.

I played it for 4 or 5 days, then off to ebay it went. It cost a full retail $50 too! A bit steep for a game with a monthly subscription. And on top of that, the game will make your eyes bleed, it's that boring.

All MMO's cost around $50 for the game when they first come out

You can download EVE for free though, have been able to for a long time. All you have to pay is the subscription.

Dark and Light is still on schedule for release at end of April,I was lucky to get a free lifetime account by finding a golden egg in SOG,I'm hoping it will live up to expectations, crafting side of it is very deep, plus it has the usual PvP and non pvp areas , probably the biggest MMORPG at the moment.

The key to having fun in EVE is finding an established PvP corp. Unfortunately, most new players to EVE don't find this out soon enough and get bored to death carebearing it up in Empire space. When/If you make it out to 0.0 space, EVE is a whole 'nother beast that can be absolutely thrilling.

The politics are also unrivaled in any other current MMO. The whole game has just gone through a major shakeup as one of the biggest alliances broke up. Some of the corporations in that (corps = guilds, alliances = formal groupings of corps) alliance went to join another major alliance. They have since broken all former political ties and issued a statement saying anyone is fair game to be fired upon. Exciting times indeed.

The economy is also completely player driven. People have played EVE as a market simulation game, that's how realistic it is.

You can download the client directly from CCP's site now and get a 14 day trial account. After that, it costs $19.95 to activate the account and get your first month. Monthly fees are then $14.95 (less if you buy in acces for 6 or 12 months). You can also buy timecards with ingame money.
