First of all, Guinness is a stout, not a porter, and easily one of the most overrated beers out there. However, unless you are going to an upscale bar that has a wide selection o craft brews, it might be your best bet. You could buy some at the supermarket first and try it out to see if you like it, but if you don't drink chances are you will not, as the flavor is quite powerful.

That being said, if you let others judge your "manliness" on what flavoring you have with your alcohol (keep in mind it is all the same ethanol either way) then that should probably be addressed. Also, you should not feel pressured to drink alcohol just because your coworkers are. If they are decent people they will respect your decision to not drink, although some light ribbing might occur, especially as they get more drunk themselves.

My suggestion is to try out some common drinks like rum and coke, screwdriver, etc. and see which you like. If you are worried about getting too drunk then be sure to eat plenty of heavy foods before you drink and have some water in between drinks.

A beer is ok, but I think ironwing is right, just get a soda or something. Don't drink just because your co-workers are.

Beer FTW. You can drink a few without too much consequence unlike a lot off mixed drinks.

Naw, if you are going with men and don't want to be a loser, beer is an ok choice, but anything with whiskey/bourbon/scotch is a true man's drink.

It's his "first time" going to a bar. Are you trying to kill him? :p

Guinness is indeed wonderful because it's such a prototype for porters. Personally, I'm a Young's Double Chocolate man because I like a bit of real chocolate in my stouts rather than just that roasted taste.

Regarding lambics, it's a very common misconception that they are fruit beers because there are many different times of lambic fruit beers (Lindemann's puts out everything under the sun). However, true lambics are simply a sour/tart beer with little other taste of which to speak - pretty much like watered down gueuzes (kinda 'cause they sorta are ;)). So they're really not the wine-coolers most people think they are; though this is VERY VERY common because of the popularity of .. really Lindemann's Framboise fruit-lambic. There are so many good things out there to drink. :)

Guinness definitely has low ABV for a man's "fuckin' beer" that's for certain. I'd have to say the bottle of Judgment Day from Lost Abbey I just drank would have to qualify - dark, complex, 10.8% I think? It could be mistaken for a dark red wine. :p Good stuff tho :p

Hmm, Young's DCS is good stuff. Speaking of Chocolate Stouts, have you had this year's batch of Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout? That beer is usually *quite* excellent.

BTW, Guinness is a Stout, not a porter (I assume that was a typo).

EDIT:eek:n your comment on lambics being watered down geuze. Well it's extremely hard to find straight lambic outside of brussels (they usually don't bottle it). But from what I've heard, they tend to be much harsher, and have very little carbonation ( I have 1 bottle of straight lambic that I haven't opened yet - saving it for a special occasion). A gueze is a blend of young and old lambic. The reason they do it is to allow the more complex yeast in the older lambics to ferment the residual sugar in the younger lambics and create fermentation.

Stouts and Porters are 'essentially' the same thing at this point. Both terms have slightly different histories, but many people use them interchangeably. I realize that there are slight differences, but I was speaking in generalities. And yes, you're right about straight lambics, my comment in parenthesis was sorta a joke/oversimplification of the truth for anyone who knows how gueuzes are made. Like you said gueuzes simply being aged lambic + lambic. What you said about lambics is pretty much the way it is; straight lambic is very acidic (I guess it could be called harsh) thus the sour/tart taste. I like 'em. I think lambics/gueuzes/ flemmish red's are probably my favorite beers out there just because they're very unique in the beer world. As far as gueuze's go, Cuvee Renee (I know this name isn't very descriptive - the full name won't come to mind right now_ used to be pretty high up there for me but it has been since toppled by another gueuze we got in at work. Also a big fan of Duchesse De Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe.

I went out last night and someone bought me something called an LC. I found out later it was short for "liquid cocaine" and it contained some concoction of 151 and jagr. Take it from me, DO NOT DRINK THIS!

I would go with the most interesting-sounding draft beer they have if you want to drink or a coke if you don't.

Whenever I go out and don't want a common beer like Molson Canadian or MGD I'll ask the bartender to recommend a lager. If it's good, I'll keep drinking it and tip well, otherwise I switch to one of the two standby's I mentioned previously.

This is delicious! You surely must be nuts. Then again, I love shots and hard alcohol...

If you have the acquired taste it sometimes takes for beer, there's nothing wrong with a Corona with a lime. Goes down great, tastes great, and your friends won't be 'laughing' at you. I also enjoy a Long Island Tea, which I'm suprised no one else has mentioned. Some places mix it pretty strong while others may have a tamed version. It can be a toss-up and the drink can venture between $4-$7, depending on where you get it. It's a mixture of several alcohols and typically contains lots of ice, but don't worry - it can be very potent if mixed juuuust right. :D I find it able to quench my sweet tooth as well as my desire for alochol.

I can't stress this enough: If you're a lightweight, just be sure you don't drive home! Phone a friend or make arrangements ahead of time for someone to pick you up. When my friends first found out that I was a lightweight, it only encouraged them to buy me more shots. If you cave in to social pressures, well...just be careful and have a good time! :)

UPDATE:

Ok so here's what happened; I asked the boss to order me a drink.

Now she got my a "Jolly Rancher" it tasted just like a cherry Jolly Rancher. Not bad at all. not sure what was in it.

Then she got me a Madress (sp?) It's vodka, cranberry juice, and orange juice. I liked it; I had two.

Then she bought a Long Island Iced Tea with top bar liqueur. I really had to baby that one. It was very very good.

I felt fine to drive home and I did; all is well thanks for the help all. It was a success!

Dude, a Long Island usually has 3-5 shots in it. Couple that with the prior 3 drinks and you most likely were well over the limit for driving.

Be careful man.

Ok....

four drinks and you felt fine to drive home. i wonder what your BAC was.

not to preach, but don't make a habit of drinking and driving even if you feel "fine" to drive home.

Depends on how long he was there. The first 3 were probably not all that much alcohol.

Long Islands though have quite a bit.
