So I'm getting old and bored with... anime

Some more "anime for grown ups" -- it's rare but some does exist.

Death Note - cat and mouse between a Sherlock Holmes type detective and a man with the power to kill (almost) anyone

Moribito - grown-up female bodyguard in a alternate-world version of feudal japan

Zone of the Enders - main character is a middle-aged space trucker with adult children

LOL.

hating animes about "high schoolers" takes some really awesome animes out of the bunch. a good example of which would be bakemonogatari.

Never said I *hated* them, I just find them formulaic and boring. Mostly because there are so, so many bad ones about Japanese high school kids. But, FLCL was about high school kids (mostly) and I did like that one.

That said, this is turning into a really cool thread! Thanks for the suggestions guys!!

Congrats Timmy! Your body will start going through several changes. Your voice will deepen, and you will notice hair where you never had it before. You will find yourself more interested in the opposite (well, 90% chance) sex.

LOL! I was thinking something along those lines myself...

So, now you can change your nick to hairyvirus.

And don't worry, even at 40 your new found manhood will energize the ladies almost as much as Viagra will.

Yup. Cowboy Bebop and Memories are the only things "anime" that I would recommend to most people.

Damn...I *love* the first short from Memories: Magnetic Rose

Friends keep telling me I need to watch Ninja Scroll, though.

Bwahahaha

Recommend Planetes. Watch it. Very good series, extremely realistic in terms of depiction of astronauts and a good rendition of what life in space might be like.

As for more sciency shows

It's really really really old, but Legends of Galactic Heroes might be a good bet. Good old fashioned space battles, lasers, more "realistic" style of space cap ship vs cap ship warfare. I think the art and animation has aged quite well.

Just got home and watched this.. not bad. Reminds me of Homeworld, and also the Battle of Jutland from WW1.

Meh, spent the last 10 years or so chasing women.. lol

Being single was a shit load of fun but there was no time to watch anime off of Netflix, that's for sure.

Some of these have already been mentioned:
Death Note
Black Lagoon
Casshern Sins
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
House of Five Leaves
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood NOT Fullmetal Alchemist
Wolf's Rain
Monster
Mushi-Shi

This is a mixed bag so YMMV.

Can't guarantee you'll like them all but...

Black Lagoon (one of the movies should be coming out soon...)
Death Note (watch the anime series not the relight crap)
Ghost in the Shell (all of it... movies + stand alone complex)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (follows the manga storyline --- other one doesn't)
Devil May Cry (eh, its short...)
Eden of The East (short too)
Akira (dude who hasn't seen it...)
Moribito
Afro Samurai (both)
Evangelion (who hasnt seen it...)
Blood The Last Vampire (and Blood+ )
Ergo Proxy
Elfen Lied
Rurouni Kenshin
Samurai X
Serial Experiments Lain
D.Gray Man
Darken Than Black

I think thats enough for now...

What is wrong with FMA?

I have to admit.. I didn't watch FMA: Brotherhood, but I thought FMA was a very good anime.
Its not that its bad. Just there's no point in watching it anymore when Brotherhood is no doubt the superior version.

So.. they both have the same basic story line? I thought brotherhood was the sequel to the original.

No, brotherhood is a remake following the manga storyline rather than drifting off into space and making up its own story like the original did.

brotherhood follows the Manga which was also excellent BTW.

the orig FMA deviated pretty early on and really is an inferior story. its not bad but Brotherhood is THAT much better

Besides the whole...

Mustang burning lust to death is fucking awesome, anime or manga 😀

Thank you guys, will watch it over the spring break.

you are finally seeing through the thin and poorly paced plots and characters?

good, it is time to drop it. most anime is so very sh**y

Saw through it all along, even when I was a teenager. The thing is, when I was younger there wasn't so much anime being produced so finding the good stuff was easier. That and I had a lot more free time...
