So im considering buying an iPod

Make sure you get the cassette adapter from walmart. You might think its a POS but my friend bought a much more expensive Sony one and it fuzzes out when you turn it up past ~half volume. Not a problem with mine. Walmart FTW.

Also you could go for the Vision M. I don't know how if the Vision M software is different, but Creative has finally worked out software issues with my Zen Touch. It used to be a PITA but now I can just drag stuff over. Not too bad if you ask me.

If they do the video by a folder structure then I don't think the software should deter you. It used to bug the crap out of me but they've mostly fixed what I didn't like. I've played with the Vision:M and it feels very nice, the scroll is good, battery life is much better than the Ipod (where it matters....for video, music is like 12h which isn't bad). IMHO the Ipod 5G looks ugly too. Bad proportions. But suit yourself.

Edit: you could try out the software from their site I bet, see if its any better.

Archos AV-500, 100gbs, bas an treble control, records video from ANY source, create playlist on the unit, delete without having to connect to pc, no software needed just drop your tunes into it from the PC or use WMP 10 or 11 for full song control. Hold 1,000,000 pics, 450 hours video, 55,000 MP3 or WMA and the battery last up to 15 hours for music and nearly 5 hours for video. Plus it can be found for 400 or less now! And of course it can be used as a USB HD. Has 2 usb ports. Its a great device.

I got an ipod and an alpine 9845 w/ aux in. Sound was worse than having an mp3 cd (even with the lineout from the ipod, i just switched sources using the same file on the ipod and mp3 cd). So now I stick to real CDs which sound a whole lot better.

But if you like the convenience then get the adapter for your HU. I know a lot of times, the HU's cd changer port in the back can be changed to an aux in using a converter cable. That is your best bet. It's either that, or get a tape adapter or new hu. The only problem with using the port on the back is that you lose CD Changer functionality. But who needs a cd changer if you are fine with an ipod right?

Sounds like something was wrong with your install.

does size matter to you at all? it sounds like to me it's just going to sit in the car and output your videos to TV, so I'm recommending the Cowon iAudio A2 PMP(portable media player). I have the 30GB version and I LOVE IT!!! 10 hours vid playback/18 hours music playback, plays every codec you could think of, excellent sound/video/everything quality, so many features you can't count em, I mean just perfect. I doesn't have an s-video out but it has a composite out and it should give good quality video. As for the cassette adapter, it's not quite CD quality of course, but it gives very good sound. One thing though, don't get the Belkin cassette adapter because that thing is starting to go out on me and I've been using that thing for barely 2 months, maybe 7 times so far, and I have to jiggle the plug to get the perfect spot(didn't mean it that way) and just hope it doesnt move to get a good signal and clean sound.

You could buy a 3.5mm casette adapter for your MP3 player. And I would get a Creative Zen Vision:M instead. It has more than double the battery life while watching video, a bigger screen, doesn't require iTunes, etc. It's a much better player.

why do ppl keep saying that, wrong. Both the iPod and the Zen have 2.5" screens, but it is true that the Zen's screen looks much nicer.
Ok, so I just found out that the iPod video does NOT support DivX (wtf?)
what did you expect? it's an iPod. No way Apple was going to play nice with us consumers and actually let ppl load DivX videos onto iPods.
btw, sorry for all the posting.

On a side note, if you do choose to get an iPod, I'd recommend getting it from Costco. It's not a bad price to start with and it comes with a lifetime return policy.

Creativ is verygreat too. but i am for Ipod only the s**t is when <aour Ipod gets broken or something like taht they wound repear it you would get a new one. But the new one gets destroid to because you don know what to do and than you get a ney Ipod and its alwasy goin. My ipod was destroyed and i must give it bach 5 times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

size is not TOO big of a deal, but if that's the case, then i would just take my laptop with me on every trip - I do want something I can easily slip into my pocket when I get out of the car.

I looked at the iPods at costco, but it seems they don't carry the Creative Zen, Im gonna stop by best buys in a bit and take a look at those.

the best buys should have the Zen for display. I'm not saying the A2 is a huge piece of hunk that's going to bog you down, I keep in my pocket everyday and it slips in pretty easily even in normal jeans pockets. I'm just saying you don't want to run the local marathon with this thing. The A2 should be a great candidate but it sounds like the Zen would be enough for you and you'd save a $100 without getting overkill stuff.

All of the people who bitch about their iPod's breaking obviously don't take care of them.

I had my 3rd gen ipod for 2 years and used it EVERY DAY... never had any problems with it for those 2 years.

I used it in my car, while working out, bike riding, normal listening... everything!

iPods are fragile, you can't expect to beat the crap out of them everyday and they'll continue working.

But keep breaking them, I'll fix everybody's iPod that's broken.

I have a 2GB Sansa e250 and I love it. I believe it does DIVX, although I don't intend to watch video on a tiny screen like that and I haven't tried it. I don't get that, at all, to be honest. AFAIK it plays WMA and MP3 files.

At any rate, the Sansa has a 20hr battery life on music, and it requires no software for putting music on it. I just plug it in, it shows up as a drive, I open it, drag my music folders into the music folder on the drive, and bam - it's there and organized on the Sansa by artist, genre, etc (all using the ID3 tags). It rules. Be aware that it doesn't play DRM files. For some people that may be a minus. For me, it was a requirement.

I'll "rent" (let's be honest, DRM is about removing true purchases from the media industry and migrating their business model to a rental system) a song from iTunes for $1.99 the day Apple comes to my house and prys the $2.00 from my cold, dead hands.

I currently use the cheapest FM transmitter I could find. The best solution, I agree, is to get a car stereo with a Line In plug on the front (or run an adapter from the back of the stereo out to the front). However, the best solution won't do jack when I want to take my music with me on a road trip in someone else's car, or with me on my friend's boats, or whatever. I would suggest that even if you do something just for your car, you'll still want to invest in the best FM transmitter you can find to make your music ultra-portable so you can share it with friends. The days of filling up a CD carrier full of discs to take a road trip are over. The FM Transmitter option allows a huge amount of flexibility that you won't always have with the high-quality line-in option.

Just my .02.

i'm pretty sure the sansa uses quicktime, low bitrate old style quicktime. its why the file sizes are huge and look like sh*t. it also got really bad audio quality ratings in reviews from what i've seen, bad ratings for total harmonic distortion and frequency response...and plenty other bugs.

as for videos. why do you careif its going to be doing audio duty in the car while ur driving? dedicated video players are better for that kinda stuff. you can get a 7" philips dvd/divx player for 150 dollars, 8.5" for 199😛 beats looking at 2.5". batteries last 4-6 horus too.

and as far as i know cassette adaptors are fine. fm adaptors are cr@p.

well, i found a good deal on a 30gb black ipod video from a friend and decided to give it a try.

all in all, it suits my needs quite well, but I can not - for the life of me - figure out how to put pictures or video onto it via itunes. For MP3s it was a simple drag+drop to the ipod, but it just won't copy pictures or video over when i drop it in.
