I wore slacks, a button-up shirt, and a tie. It was hot out there in the sun, but I'm sure my family liked seeing me all dressed up, and the ceremony was more for them than for me.

This is from a 4 year university...... i was instructed to "dress nicely". Is that slacks + button up shirt + tie?

Most 4 year universities include a list of acceptable / guidelines for dress with the graduation crap.

Depending on class/school/etc it could be anything from khakis and a polo to a full suit.

I was able to get by comfortable in khakis and a casual button down. Some still wore more formal attire (mostly due to going out right after though).
