Shirt and tie, definitely. I just prefer to dress up for something like that, though.

I wore slacks, a button-up shirt, and a tie. It was hot out there in the sun, but I'm sure my family liked seeing me all dressed up, and the ceremony was more for them than for me.

The pix are all going to be of you in the gown - that's the point of graduation pix. Wear whatever you want. Congrats.

Most 4 year universities include a list of acceptable / guidelines for dress with the graduation crap.

Depending on class/school/etc it could be anything from khakis and a polo to a full suit.

I was able to get by comfortable in khakis and a casual button down. Some still wore more formal attire (mostly due to going out right after though).
