So if I get 14,000 in 3DMark05 with my XTX, does that mean

I went from a 4400+ at between 2.6-2.7 to an E6600 at 3.6ghz. Now, my 3DMark 05 score went from around 12-something to 14000.

My question is, did the faster CPU give more 'points' itself to that 14000 score, or is that 14000 simply the work of the XTX now less/not CPU limited?


I'm thinking its the second, right?

BTW, the CPU Score is double what the 4400+ at 2.65 gave!!!

Ok that's what I was thinking. So the CPU score isn't added into the total score (ie, the 14000).

14k single card air is really pretty good, I'm impressed

IIRC 05 doesn't include your CPU directly in the benchmark like 06 does. BTW thats 6X the score of my 9600XT/P4 3.2E rig 🙁

Yes but it balances out. 05 runs at 1024X768 (a more CPU limited resolution), 06 runs at 1280X1024 with HDR (more GPU limited).

3dmark05 only counts the graphics card benchmarks (the first three) and the CPU ones just add more time and AFAIK it doesn't count them.
Yes your CPU limited anyway.
I get 15,000 (only 1000 more) in 3dmark05 with my dual 7900GT's in SLI.
Now I also get 9,500 in 3dmark06 and your probably not going to come close to that 🙂

No. It's hard to explain why though, someone else can do a better job of clarifying it perhaps.

The difference though is that:

In case one, the 14000 score is entirely the work of the XTX, LESS/No longer limited by the CPU speed

or

Case two, the 14000 score is the XTX's portion of the score + the CPU's portion of the score. (ie, the XTX gets say, 12000 points, and the CPU gets 2000 based upon its own performance in the second series of tests, totalling 14000)

I'm pretty sure its case one, in which the XTX is quite impressive, given that with a bit better overclock I could hit 15k single card

3dmark05 doesn't add it up.
Your CPU speed is still taken into account just not directly. You can run the test with the CPU tests disabled to save time since it's not added to the total.
But with 1024x768 testing resolution, it still loads your CPU while not directly testing it.

Use 3dmark06.

PS: Please take the following with a grain of salt. I see what you're saying: You seem to be asking whether the "heavy" tests are running faster, or whether your score went up as a result of the CPU tests alone - a good question, and my answer is, both.


They are the same thing. You're thinking "14000 is entirely the work of the XTX" but, in reality, the CPU and GPU are always working at the same time. It's never the work of just one of them. Notice how, in most benchmark situations, increasing either CPU, or GPU, or RAM speed increases the score. This is because, in theory, each component is waiting on one of the others at least some of the time. You never completely eliminate bottlenecking. People treat bottlenecking like it's some kind of deadly disease that they have to avoid or they'll crash and burn their PC.

05 is deffinately CPU limited with such cards as the X1900's and SLI set ups. i've checked it my self. 500mhz extra CPU speed gave me over 1000 more points,

simple as that really. at 2Ghz i got 9500 ish and at 2.5Ghz i was at 11000. turned it back down to 2Ghz and im back at 9500 again. that was with 7800GT SLI
