Im calling tommorow morning to work out the details of its return.... Question though..... (to anyone who has gone through this before)

Do you think there is any chance they might send another before they recieve the RMA back? I've never dealt with a situation like this before so i dunno how it works. Normally, i wouldnt care if it took a few days for them to recieve it back and then send me one but the problem is that I'm starting law school very soon and need a working laptop as soon as humanly possible.

Do they normally just ship you out a new one and then pickup the return the same day? Or do companies typically wait until they have recieved the old one back?

Worse comes to worse, i can always just buy a second one and get a refund on the first.

UPDATE: Damnit, im fvked. They are backordered by 5-15 business days. :(

Mine was purchased directly through IBM.

Here's what happens for warranty service. It may be slightly different for DOA.

You call IBM and they decide it's defective. It will go much faster if you just let them follow thier scripts. They will figure out you need the laptop fixed. Same day (monday), they will send you a box airborne overnight. You will receive it the next day (tuesday). You put the laptop in the box and fill out a little paperwork and call airborne to pick it up same day (tuesday). The laptop is overnighted to IBM where it is received Wednesday). 3/4 of the times I've used them, IBM ships out the laptop same day, and you receive it Thursday, otherwise the ship it Thursday and you get it Friday.

Basically, from the moment i turned it on its been the slowest SOB ive ever used. The first boot took around an hour (which is to be expected on a first boot) but once entering Windows the first time, applications took forever to load.

Every subsequent boot takes nearly 15 minutes before i make it to windows, and once in windows it takes around 20-30 minutes more before most of the applications running in the tray are loaded (not that many mind you). The system is pretty much unusable, clicking on the start menu takes roughly 1-2 minutes to pop up, and My Computer is around 5 minutes for me to even see anything about what drives i have.

Even after running a full system recovery, she's yielding the same results. Even tech support suggested i just send it back and get another.

wow, that is screwed up.

But I have to disagree about first bootups taking an hour (unless you are exaggerating, upon which i can't really tell). But no boot up should take more than 5 min even if it is the first bootup. 5 minutes MAX..hell 3 min max!

regardless tho, your laptop is messed up, hope you get a replacement fast.

Now that I think about it, that's what happens you you disable the processor's cache in the bios. Have you checked the bios settings?

some companies will charge your credit card for the replacement, then refund it when they get the bad one back. no idea if IBM will do it.

IBM is quick with their warranty service but it's shoddy from my experience. I had a T series Thinkpad go down and I called them. The turnaround is only 3-4 days as everything is done overnight (shipping, repair). But it took them 3 times to figure out the problem (each time they sent it back to me unrepaired) until finally they replaced the mobo.

They are stingy as hell about doing a laptop replacement. After the 2nd time it wasn't fixed I wanted a replacement but they wouldn't do it. Luckily they fixed the problem the 3rd time, but that's still unacceptable IMO.

I had a stuck pixel on mine and I called to exchange mine. I told the CSR that I had already been using mine for a good week and couldn't go for very long without it. He told me that I could buy a new one and then return mine when I got the replacement. Sure the charge will be there for a week or so, and you do have to be quick about returning your new one.
