So I won a 7800GS on eBay

Here is my plan. After I get the card, I will install it, with the stock cooler, and run a series of benchmarks and play testing on it. All with the stock clocks as well. After I have a good idea of the card's capabilities, I intend to remove the stock cooler and install Ramsinks and a Tt Tide Water.

With the new, more powerful coolers, I will run another battery of tests and play testing with the stock clocks to determine the new idle/load temps with the water cooling.

And finally, after all that, I will try increasing the frequency of the core and ram. From other 7800GS cards and reviews, most 7800GSs can hit 460Mhz core with stock cooling. I am eager to see how water cooling will help.

I'll dust off my digital camera and take some pictures of the setup, if anyone wants to see them.

The cooling hardware should be hear before saturday, the card itself by next week. Just an update for those interested.

not the point :D

So, what is the point?

idk just my guess but, maybe to find out the performance of a watercooled 7800GS?

shhh...that makes sense ;)

Let me spell it out for you...

What is the point of determining the performance of a watercooled 7800GS when their are already cards that are cheaper that will perform better than this 7800GS no matter what you do to it? Of course, if the OP says, "cuz it's fun", than that's certainly a good enough reason, but it still doesn't make it very useful.

Nice, but how do you plan to cool off the HSI bridge?

No. PCIe would require a new motherboard, CPU and video card. And, if I'm going to do all that, I might as well get a bigger case and beefier PSU as well. Also, I am holding out for AM2 before I do a complete overhaul.

A 7800GS at stock already outperforms my current 6800GT in almost all titles, winning a few by a good 50% margin. Its more advanced core draws less power and runs cooler than the 6800GT. Plus, watercooling is something I've wanted to try out for a while. Lastly, the summers here in Phoenix are pretty hot and usually I am unable to maintain any OCs throughout the summer.

Once AM2 arrives, I'll be looking at watercoolng for that as well.

Meh, I'll just stick a ramsink on it. Should do the trick.

I think it's a pretty valid question of what the value is in putting a $100 cooling solution on a $300 card that everyone already knows will be outperformed by a stock 7900GT...

If the OP can post we can ask why, right?

I didn't pay 300 dollars for the card. :p Bought it on eBay, rememger.

I'm aware of that, but you also didn't post what you paid for it...

Again, I'm not knocking it. As long as you're enjoying your purchase(s), that what counts...

ITS NOT VALID AT ALL. IT REQUIRES A NEW MOBO AND MAYBE A NEW CPU FOR THE USER.

Some early pics of the ramsinks and the Tide Water. I am starting to get a little nervous as I haven't heard from the eBayer since last sunday, but he's got 4300 positive feedbacks, so I'll give him a few more days. If there is a snafu, I'll put the Tide Water on my 6800GT and see how that goes.

The Ramsinks
Tide Water in the box
Tide Water box open
Tide Water partially unpacked

Thats all the further I am willing to unpack it at this point. It fits very snug in the box and seems to be very well packaged. There does seem to be some air bubbles in the reservoir, and, while I am new to liquid cooling systems, I gather this is undesirable.

More to follow.

Finally got the 7800GS card and installed it. Thus far, I have not put on the Tidewater yes. I'll be doing that this weekend. Here are some 3D Mark scores comparing the 6800GT to the 7800GS at stock.

Also, since I own the Advanced Edition of 3D Mark 2006, I've exported the detailed results to Excel. You can check them out at the links below.

As you can see, the 7800GS is only marginally faster than a 6800GT, at stock settings. However, it the 7800GS does run cooler than the 6800GT, averagng 5*C at idle and load. Keep in mind that my case has poor airflow due to being full. My 6800GT idles at about 63*C and loaded at around 70*C. In the summer, with the Phoenix heat, the 6800GT idled at 67*C and loaded at 78*C. At present, the 7800GS idles at around 52*C, and loads at about 65*C. Also, my 6800GT is using a Vantec iceberg 5 cooler because the original cooler's fan died. The 7800GS is using BFG's stock cooler, which is a similar design to Nvidia's reference, except its made of copper instead of aluminum.

All tests conducted using 82.25 Forceware.

stupidity ftw.

Sure it's valid... You can sell your AGP stuff to help fund the purchase of a PCIe rig. That's what I did, and that's what the guy who sold the OP his 7800GS did... Creativitiy can work in more ways that slapping watercooling on an overpriced AGP card in a losing attempt to make it keep up with current hardware.

The OP has

Intel P4 3400MHz
Asus P4P800 Deluxe

You can still get pretty decent money for a P4 3.4 and a P4P800 Dlx

exact combo sold on ebay for $330

That is probably a bit higher than what I would expect, but even at $250ish plus the money spent on the 7800GS and Tidewater would be a really good start on a 7900GT and a Socket 939 motherboard and processor. Of course, I still don't know what the OP paid for his 7800GT, but the low end on ebay is around $250. I think I might have seen one for $235. If you look at that, plus the cost of the Tidewater, and the money you could sell the current gear for, you have about $600 to work with, which is plenty for a $300 7900GT, $100 mobo, and a $200 Athlon64 cpu. This rig would be faster and more upgradeable than the OP's current set up.

Sorry to the OP, I'm not knocking what you're doing. I just get a bit touchy when someone writes me off as stupid when they themselves simply haven't looked into all the options.

Okay, need to clarify a few things.

1) The eBayer who sold the 7800GS didn't use the card. It was a brand new card and arrived in a sealed retail box.

2) I don't want a s939 system. When I build a system, I want the basic parts to last a good while. I originally built a P4 2.4C, P4P800 Deluxe, 1GB of RAM, and a 9600 Pro. That was in July 2003. Today, its a P4 3.4E, P4P800 Deluxe, 2GB of RAM, and a 7800GS. If I sold this setup and bought a s939 system, I would effectively be screwing myself over in the long run. Socket 939's fastest CPU is an FX-60, a screaming fast CPU to be sure, but also 1000+ USD. And, its the end of the line for a s939 mobo. A few short months after AM2 debut, the FX-60 will be eclipsed by the equally expensive FX-62, as well as a full complement of A64X2 chips which will deliver more performance than their s939 counterparts at an equal or lower price point. As I said, I like to keep core parts for a while, at least a year. I could buy a s939 and A64 4000 or X2 4400 now, then sell it only 3 or 4 months after I bought it for the much faster AM2 chips. Not worth the hassle.

3) A 200 dollar A64 wouldn't be much worth the time either. For single core chips, it'd have to be a 3700 or 4000 and for dual core it'd have to be one of the 1MB L2 cache X2s, likely a 4400. Only one that comes close to 200 is the 3700, which is only a single core CPU and I definitely want a dual core.

4) 100 dollar mobo? Uh, no. The s939 mobo I want, the Asus A8N-SLI Premium, is a bit more than 100. :p 7900GT? Hell no! I don't buy midrange. I buy high end. I like to play my games at max settings, with AA, at my 2005FPWs native res. The 7900GT can't do that in a lot of titles out right now, and certainly won't be able to do it on future titles.

5) The Tidewater's univeral design will allow it to be used all almost all V/GPUs, so its a part that will carry over the the G80 or R580+ parts when they arrive.

6) I have a co-worker who is interested in buying my current system at the end of July. Since he's a good friend and has helped me on numerous occasion, I'll be practically giving this setup away, minus the HDDs, DVD-ROMs, and Tidewater.

7) Relating to point 6, I'd also need a new case and PSU, further adding to the cost.

Lastly, I fully intend to do a complete overhaul in August, after the AM2 platform has debuted and stabilized a little. New case, PSU, vidcard, sound card, the works. Since I want to use water cooling on the CPU and video card in that system as well, I need to get a little experience with watercooling now. I live in the valley of the sun, the summer heat makes most OCs impossible. Unless you want a 400 USD electric bill 9 months out of the year.

And my final point, its fun to play with new hardware, regardless of what it is. :p

I like your style.

I also used to have a P4P800 Deluxe, and a P4 3.4, mine was a Northwood though. That motherboard lasted me two years with a 2.6 and a 3.4, and was a really sweet setup. My wife still has the 2.6 in another P4P800, and it's still a decent rig. Also, most of the other components you mentioned pretty much match my rig (4400+, A8N-SLI Premium). The only thing I would say against the A8N-SLI Premium in terms of longevity is that it apparently has issues with running 4GB of RAM (at least that's what Monarch says).

As far as AMR2 goes, I'm going to wait and see how Conroe and the AMR2 chips compare (and Vista) before I buy anything. Socket 939 is probably going to be pretty viable for a while yet, but at this point it's tough to say how it will stack up against Conroe and AMR2.

At any rate, it doesn't matter how useful it is as I personally am interested in seeing the results of watercooling an AGP 7-series card. Just cause you don't see the point, doesn't mean it's wrong.

That tide water is a trip, interested in how well it performs :)
