So I was watching Star Wars for the eleventy billionth time and....

..came up with a brilliant idea. If I could round up $1,000,000 in capital I could develop full kevlar face masks for the military (like the storm troopers wear). They can be upgraded w/a digital compass, temp and humidity sensors and maybe even integrated night vision. All will have an auto dimming photocromatic material that provides eye protection during the day and are clear at night.

Lightweight, fragment resistant, bullet proof face protection.

Now where do I get the seed money? :hmm:

Nowhere. In fact, you'd get sued because companies already hold patents for those. There are real versions of that functioning in the real world, on the battlefield, only with less bloat.

I did a quick google search, not a patent search.

I signed an NDA so I wont give out too much information, but I sat in on paid jury trial where two companies were involved in a patent dispute just last week. I learned a lot about the process, which was fascinating. It was a grueling 12 hour "trial". There were several infringements claimed on various products but in the end the majority ruled in favor the plantiff (which was a David vs Goliath struggle). David had the better lawyer but didnt get everything he wanted, but enough to make it worth his while.

It doesnt take much to get sued in the patents game, so I would definately negotiate. 😉

Already been done.

There are already companies with much more expertise, more resources, and a head start working on this sort of thing.

this thread is now about pie

My wife recently discovered the secret to the Apple pie. You need to make it with as many different kinds of apples possible, some sweet and some tart, and chop them into small pieces. You'll get a mix of different kinds of apples in each bite. I'm usually not a huge fan of apple pie but this one was delicious.

When I make apple pie, it always comes out too juicy. I sprinkle some flour in the bottom of the crust, but still doesn't seem to help. Any ideas?

Wow, that sounds really good.

Yeah, the apple pie is dependent on the apples you put in it. Fresh sliced and peeled apples only. My favorite blend is McIntosh and Gala in an home-made cream cheese crust... mmmm

One of my Soldiers bought a full Kevlar mask when we deployed. He wore it for about 2 hours before taking it off and never putting it on again (due to the heat).

The last one that my wife made had 5 types of apples 😱. I think it was McIntosh, Johnagold (sp?), Gala, Honeycrisp and a granny smith. Slicing them up into small enough pieces takes forever, we were shooting for thin slices with the area between that of a nickel or a quarter.

I only help up with the cutting so I'm not sure of the whole recipe but I do know that she got it from this book.

Strangely, comfort is the #1 safety tool. One class I was in looked at an accident where a guy shorted his body across a 25KV electrical system. The situation was:
-peak of summer (late july)
-working outside in a full fire-retardant suit
-it was roughly 3pm (hottest point in the day is usually around 2pm)

The guy did so many things wrong it was unbelievable. Working on the wrong side of the transformer, it wasn't grounded properly, he wasn't wearing his gloves, etc. I wasn't there, but I would guess that this entire incident is directly caused by the guy being too hot, too dehydrated,

Perhaps this is why the Army has not implemented this technology yet. Im sure they have already considered such a thing. Maybe the body just needs certain points in contact with the air to regulate body tempreture.

I just havent seen anything remotely similar (that serves a real military purpose) to this yet:

Your entire body uses sweat glands.

You don't even understand an elementary school level health class? And you want to make shit our troopers will wear?

Yes, the entire body uses sweat glands. Where did I say I didnt understand that? On the battlefield the majority of the body is covered, leaving little exposed to the air. Removing the faces exposure is probably too much.

Do you always have to come in with an attitude?

You are probably not letting it sit for long enough after taking it out of the oven. If you cut into within an hour and a half then the juices just get all runny. If you let it sit for an hour and a half or two then they seep into the crust, 3 hours is best. Still warm but not runny.

seriously how dangerous are light sabers! imagine something like that existing. Thousands of kids would die, parents would be outraged, etc..

I wonder how many padawans die at the jedi academy each year in light saber related accidents.

This point was raised in that review of Star Wars Episode 2. The little jedi kids are like 2 feet away from each other and practicing with light sabers. Even when we were dickin around with basketballs or something like that in school, we were at least in a gym with lots of space.
