So... I was just (unexpectedly) offered a job...

Kinda ironic, considering my earlier post.

Anyway, last week I applied for a position on craigslist - details were vague, but I was drawn to the fact they were a start-up company and paid for all training ($2,000 total/person).

They called me in for an interview this afternoon, and I met with the president of the company and the girl in the "I LOVE HISTORY!" Old Navy commercial. Apparently the job is for the position of a loan officer, and I would work... mortaging loans. It's 100% comission-based, no insurance or benefits...

They kept stressing how much money you could make if you were "hungry" and had connections, but... I don't have many connections, or experience in sales. I have a feeling I'd probably do okay, but it's a pretty big risk... right now, I have a low-stress, stable (at the moment), low-paying job ($35k/year pre-taxes)... but there's no potential for growth or mobility, and I'm ready for a change.

I'm just not sure if this is the right change, though... training starts next week, and I have to make a decision fast. Apparently they got 400 applications, selected 40 to interview, and will pay to train 15. I've been chosen as one of the 15... what would you do?

GOOD loan officers can make bank... one of my girlfriends does it, and she's 26 making $250k/year, average. Just bought a brand new 2004 alpine white BMW M3 and a house in the OC. *sigh*

I know how to talk and have good people skills, but I lack connections... and feel bad lying or making people do something they may not want to do. Still, money talks and I don't want to be making $35k/year in LA forever... I called my dad to ask for advice, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

Of course, I figured AT was my next best option. :p

ewwwwww. i hope you don't get hurt anytime soon if you take the job; unless you have a spouse that has insurance that will cover you both.

Yes, her name's Danielle. She's beautiful in person, very leggy. I think she's Indian, but I'm not positive. She'd be my mentor if I accepted the job.

Sales can be tough. No benefits? Hmm......if they really want you they will offer some benefits.

I asked about that, and they said you have to "prove yourself" first... if you're good, they'll pretty much give you anything you want (in terms of insurance, vacation, etc.).

No kidding. :( Spouse/fiance is a grad student, his USC student insurance barely covers himself (he doesn't even have dental right now).

Dude, screw the job.....we want to hear more about the "I love history" girl.
Did she came out and tell you she was, or you guessed ??

I don't get the connection of her being in the loan business to making commercials.

I worked on a job like this during the summer.. and quit 2 weeks in. Believe me, when they say they got 400 applicants, they weren't lying, everyone applies because they hope it's better than it looks. This job you can make 100 in a day, or 0, and I saw lots of people pulling zeroes. I wouldn't touch that.

I personally wouldn't take the job... you will be lying in people's faces all the time, and sounds like it will be a high pressure environment...

Didn't seem like a scam, they had a little office set up and everything... sorry, no pics of Danielle, I think it might've been a bit unprofessional to gawk and whip out my digicam during the interview. Nice girl though, and if I take the job I'll be seeing a lot more of her. Maybe pics then, but that better not be an influence one way or another in neutral advice given about the decision. :p

Right now I'm leaning towards no... I'm a risk-taker, but not THAT big of a risk-taker. Still, the potential for a huge income is tempting... I just wish I had connections I could capitalize on.

It's the same crap as commission based insurance sales, they flash the LOOK HOW MUCH MONEY YOU CAN MAKE in front of everyone. The job can be done by anyone, little or no education is required. Wanna know why they are hiring 15 people? Because 90% of them will fail/wash out. Ever heard of Primerica? It is the same style job. The company takes very little or no risk in "training" you while you risk everything, no benefits, no salary. You work for 2 weeks and make 1 sale the company takes in $500 and has made a profit, while you maybe made $100. They hire 15-20-30 people they have ZERO expenses for those people, say 40% of those hired makes a sale, they company has made a sh!tload, while they maybe paid out 500 to the people they hired.

Agreed on both points. :p

It isnt a scam, its just all flash. Trust me I've been through it, my father fell for the Primerica crap worked 60+ hours a week for 2 years and maybe made 30k over the course of the 2 years. I just graduated from college this May, and was inundated with the same type jobs craigslist is FULL of them as well as monster. Bottom line is these type jobs are SPAM jobs. They will hire anyone at anytime, the turn over rate for insurance/mortgage broker jobs is close to 90%
