and I was really amazed with the linux/windows ratios.

the number of results on a simple search for each term:

apache: 336
IIS: 760

SQL Server: 3034
MySQL: 123
PostgreSQL: 4
Oracle Linux: 249
DB2 Linux: 43

Active Directory: 534

ASP: "more than 5000"
PHP: 447
Perl: 1014
JSP: 2808

Linux Administrator: 166
Windows Administrator: 714

Anyway, we all know statistics lie and liars use statistics, I just thought this was interesting.

Try some of your own, see what you come up with.

Companies that use Unix/Linux prosper and have less reason to be firing then hiring people. Windows-using companies lay people off in huge waves in order to get through a financial reporting period underbudget (having had to pay through the nose for another upgrade of Windows), then have to hire people to come back and do the jobs they got rid of before. Same for Microsoft database applications versus others. Plus, there's a higher rate of people who go insane trying to make Microsoft products do what they want, so there's more churn from that.

wow you do have a vary narrow view of the world.

did you ever stop to think that the reason that companies need microsoft techs is because windows is run as a desktop OS so much more in the business world? Yes *nix boxes are used more as servers however just about every desktop that they serve runs windows. at that ratio a company would need 10 microsoft techs for every one *nix tech.

3 types of lies in this world:
lies, damn lies, and statistics

the data is useless unless you know what to do with it.

Yes, i would agree there are more jobs for Microsoft products than non-Microsoft products. After all, Microsoft dominates the industry...duh!

spyordie007: lighten the hell up. Not everything anyone says is intended to be taken seriously.

Besides, all a Microsoft desktop OS administrator needs to know how to do is format and run a Ghost floppy.

no offence man, just trying to remind everyone to look at the big picture.

That and I dislike zealots about anything, I hate Macintosh zealots, I hate *nix zealots and I hate Microsoft zealots. This is a multiple-guess world and the only time you are truly wrong is when you close your eyes to all other options. Not that I'm implying that is what you are doing, but that is how I interpreted your post.

Nah, I'm just stuck between the world of Microsoft, which is easy to use and gets the job done but controls things too rigidly, and the world of Linux which isn't so easy to use and doesn't get things done the way I want, and doesn't do enough controlling.

Well, if you learn how to do those two things, if you haven't already, then I would LOVE to see you administer an MS network! I suppose all you need to do is keep the patches up to date and you have a "secure" network?! LOL!
