I have been told cities like Phoenix have ordanances where businesses are required to give you free water if you just ask.

But thats just one city and it was an ordanance enacted for public safety and general health. I can understand it there.

Other places can set up their own rules, and if they dont want to encourage a bunch of freeloaders they might put certain policies into place.

Thats why I like my local 76 Station.
I work nights and even when I'm off I usually sleep during the day (to keep my body from whacking out). That often means many late night visits to mini-marts. The local 7-11 always has a bunch of losers out front begging me for money. And I dont mean genuine homeless people either, I mean sorry bastards who are too lazy to get jobs and too messed up to keep them if they tried. They always hit me up for a buck when I leave.
Got tired of that and went to the 76 instead.
They dont allow loitering and actually call the cops if someone hangs around after being asked to leave.
Creates a much more comfortable environment for customers like me who have to be up late but arent in the mood to be harassed.

Am NOT saying that people who ask for free water at a drive-through are lazy bums, but its the principle of discouraging folks to come around begging.

I dunno, I think it is a FAR stretch to equate asking a food establishment for water to panhandling in front of a convenience store.

If a place didn't give out water I would think twice before going there.

Yey, I like stories like that.

Every coffee place I've been to gives you water for free if you've paid for another drink or food. They'll even refill the water, too.

That would be odd, to me, too.

I wouldnt have to. When you've been running around in 110 degree weather all day you wont be so picky.

I agree. You dunno.
If you'll notice the second word in that sentance is a great big capitalized NOT.
I am NOT equating the two, I am saying its the principle of a business to discourage freeloaders and loiterers.

It might seem harsh, but if you've ever run a small business yourself you would probably get it.
Small business owners/managers have a lot of BS to put up with and things customers would consider minor are big concerns to the owner.

The next time some dude in a restaurant wants you to pay for water, pretend to sniff the air and ask with a serious face "Is breathing oxygen in your store free too or is there a charge?"

Don't wait for the answer. You have three options at the moment :

1. Make an angry, sarcastic face while leaving.

2. Pretend to collapse unconscious on your face (because you stopped breathing air to save money!) When they panic, wake up, laugh on their faces.

3. Pretend to fart into the air and ask for a discount because you added 'flavoring' to the atmosphere inside the store. Ask them to take it out of the money they charged for the water. There is no need for you to leave the store by yourself, they gonna kick you out anyway!

Soda might as well BE water for how cheap it is. The profit margin on soda is insane. Manager's an idiot.

I'm saying that while you're not neccesarily equating the two as you indicated in your post (which I quoted) I was trying to say it's a far stretch to compare the two in any imaginable way. Although I admit, I did phrase that poorly and was unclear about what I meant. I highly doubt someone who bought a cup of coffee asking for water on the side is even in the same ballpark as someone asking for money outside a convinience store.

I would expect the vast majority of people to expect being able to get a free cup of water at a restaurant. I don't think most people would expect panhandlers anytime they go to a convenience store.

Why should water be free at a take out place like DD? The store would probably need to give you a store branded cup for the water and it isn't free.

Wash the coffee down with? WTF. You don't like coffee. Then get a soda. That is just silly.

@op

You know, it might just be that they don't have any safe drinking water. In that case it is probably best that you never eat there again... ever.

-edit- oh, and this is a joke btw, hopefully. -edit-

I'm sorry, but this thread is really funny. You are already being massively overcharged for a product that is essentially water with a drug. Now you need water to wash your drug down and it is a topic of discussion? My father ran a small business and it drove him to bankruptcy. While I am sure that I will get jumped for this comment because of various reasons, it does not take a brain surgeon to see the problem with our economy. Everyone wants more and wants to pay less. The employees want to be paid more and want more perks for working there. It is not balanced at all.

I have no more comments, but pray that this latest economic recession really hits people hard so that they realize this economy is a house of cards, and can be toppled quite easily.

Keep a plastic cup in your car for fun:
A way to turn this around if they ask for the full price of the soda when you just want the cup (for water), is then say "so I guess I'm paying for the cup and not for the soda then..."
--employee probably doesn't care about thinking atm he just wants your order so he can fulfill it and get back to doing nothing or thinking about his newest video game or talking with other employees--

"yah"
"ok so then I'll just use this cup instead since the soda is free"

Works better with the girls, they're just like ~whatever~
The guys take it personally and tell you no usually.

Food places usually are required to have restrooms, not provide free water. However, I don't think they would have a problem of you going in there and putting your head under a faucet or filling your own cup.
