Some places charge 5-10 cents for water, to pay for the cup and such. That makes sense to me, and I'll pay it. Are you saying they wouldn't sell you water?

I remember it was a big deal when AZ actually passed the law requiring places to give free water. I couldn't believe anyone would refuse to give a free cup of water as a courtesy, maintaining good customer relations and what not.

Frankly, it's a poor decision. How much does it cost to provide a free cup of water? Maybe a dime at the most. How much profit is lost by customers who go elsewhere due to poor practices like this? A hell of a lot more than a dime.

A local Taco Bell did that to me once (though not in the drive-thru) as they claimed too many people were asking for water then filling the cup with soda anyways. I argued with the guy and offered to let him follow me over to the machine to see that I was going to fill it up with water, and he still said he wasn't allowed to. I called Taco Bell corporate later that day and explained what happened, and they apologized, said the manager can't do that, and sent me a whole bunch of free coupons.

Soda might as well BE water for how cheap it is. The profit margin on soda is insane. Manager's an idiot.

That's not the point. They want you to buy the soda BECAUSE the profit margin is insane. If you want soda and ask for a water cup, then Taco Bell doesn't get any money. Enough people exploited this concept that they stopped giving out water cups.

If you want to prevent that kind of practice, keep the soda machine behind the counter. You can still give free refills, just do it for the customer. In my experience, most people who ask for the water cup are actually getting water.

I work for starbucks, near a highschool......everyday without fail we get 50+ kids in asking for water....then they just loiter without buying anything.........and have water fights......i hate highschool kids

now it's with purchase only.....bathroom used to be the same way, filled with graffiti, cause 50+ HS kids think it's a public restroom, while our paying customers have to wait....rediculous, i hate highschool kids

It has to do with then you have people just getting water and hanging out. The cup is not free on top of that and many of these 'types' would pitch their cups and ask for another one.

Meanwhile they are locking a table up.
