So I was at the Dunkin Donuts today...

I go through the drive-thru and grab an XL Coffee, and I say "and can I have a small cup of water with that" so I get the usual "sure, your total is blah blah" and I drive around to the window and some Dunkin Donuts lady is like "Um...we can't just give away water."

...

Crazy stuff..I might pick one of the OTHER 80 coffee joints to give my patronage to, makes me wonder, didn't we have a thread once about the legality of denying basic amenities to paying customers?

she could've charged you for it. A local Mickey D's started doing that, so I started going elsewhere.

A local Taco Bell did that to me once (though not in the drive-thru) as they claimed too many people were asking for water then filling the cup with soda anyways. I argued with the guy and offered to let him follow me over to the machine to see that I was going to fill it up with water, and he still said he wasn't allowed to. I called Taco Bell corporate later that day and explained what happened, and they apologized, said the manager can't do that, and sent me a whole bunch of free coupons.

Legal? Eh, why does that even come into the equation? It costs them money for the cup and I'm sure they pay a water bill just like the rest of us.

I always get water now when I go out ot eat. A lot of places charge 2 sometimes 3 dollars for a glass of tea or soda. A lot of places have cups for water now, usually clear small cups.
The second they start charging for water, mind you over the price of the cup if it was to go as i don;t eat fast food, then i would not eat there anymore.

But OP as you and others hinted at, protest with your wallet and write a e-mail to their corp on why they just lost you as a customer.

I only asked that because I thought we had a thread on it a long time ago. Was curious if anyone remembered it.

do they sell bottled water?

Yeah, which I ended up buying instead, but kind of regretted because I just wanted something to wash my coffee down with.

I think I will make a call when I get some downtime later today, merely on principle. As long as I've been alive water has been freely available where food is served, it's so ignorant...I know it's not a chain wide policy so just some arrogant manager probably.

Where do you live? In the South we do have a drought. Where I live, we are in Stage 4 restrictions where water is not a basic amenity but can be ordered as your drink. (instead of coffee, tea, soda, etc.)

Stage 5 is supposed to offer bottled water (at cost) and use disposable cutlery and plates. However, I do know at the big mall, "The Streets of Southpoint" all of this ignored. They even water their lawn (in winter!), even though I know the city has received many complaints.

Now the politicians want to charge more for water instead of making the tough call to actually restrict water usage. Idiots...

Hey Max, no such problem here. I live in Maine, so we've had like..180 inches of snow this winter..=)

That does stink on your end though..some people bribe the meter readers to break water restrictions I hear.

You should follow this example, op.

Sure, it's legal for them to do, but it is in the best interest of the corporation and their brand for the franchises to take the small financial hit on water to keep you satisfied/not pissed off at Dunkin Donuts.

Taco Bell corporate is awesome--any feedback to them usually results in a coupon for any single menu item. I have called and/or emailed them a few times, but only for legitimate gripes. I don't abuse their generosity.

It's just a few ounces of water. Wait until you get to work or home, where you can get it for almost nothing, with no hassle. You're not going to dehydrate yourself to death if you go several minutes without water, even with the diuretic effects of the coffee.

Why should companies be required to provide you anything other than the products they sell? Some gas stations and stores I've gone to specifically say, "No customer restrooms." Do I have to call someone and complain about that, too?

Starbucks by my school has a jug with water that you're allowed to take for free. It's pretty gross, but it is available. Whenever I used to go to six flags during the summer we would laugh at all the people paying 6 bux for a bottle of dasani when we could go to any stand and grab a cup of water (sometimes with ice!) for free. It was kind of a way to stick it to the man and his ridiculous prices.

Comprehend.

Man I hate it when people take text out of context.

I ASKED...

"didn't we have a thread once about the legality of denying basic amenities to paying customers?"

I didn't say "Is it illegal?" I asked if we had TALKED about it before.

Yeah..I feel pretty much the same.

I just paid 2.50 for grounds and water, and I don't wish to pay another 2.00 for just water, so can you spare 5 cents of your huge profit margin and give me a small cup.

I always get water when out to eat as well. Its alot better than a $2 coke or tea.
I just hate the fact that alot of places give out dinky kids cups whenever you order water. Or course its also fun to stand there and chug 2 or 3 glasses making the clerk refil it everytime until they give you a regular cup :p

Almost everywhere here charges for the cup. The policy is really enforced in the places where you can get free refills.

These trashy families come in and just ask for water cups. Meanwhile the kids are already talking about making suicides and stuff. They play it off after the fact that they thought it was 'water'.

A dunkin donut rant from yesterday: credit card machine was broken. It was clearly labeled on the door with the next nearest dunkin donuts in both directions listed. It was also on the register.

Guy orders a coffee, gets it and then whips out his card. Goes about apeshit when they tell him the credit card machine is broken. He INSISTS it's a 'Fucking DEBIT CARD YOU STUPID IDIOT'....they gave him his coffee anyway.

I'd have probably poured hot water on him. I said 'oh tough guy!' he wouldn't turn around.

Thread Topic:

No Water? Is that even legal?

Are you sure about that?
