My co worker is an Apple guy, he has been trying to get me to try OS X for over a year. I am a 10yr user of the PC. DOS, Windows 3.11, 9X and all recent builds. At work we have 2K servers and our client base is all Microsoft. We have alot of UNIX based mainframes and I have been wanting to learn UNIX for quite some time. My Co-worker finally talks me into trying OS X partly due to the UNIX base and the system he gave me(Nothing special, and old G4 power PC 450) and I have to admit, I REALLY LIKE OSX its clean and crisp.

I feel so dirty :(

ack..

They got to you

I can't stand working on macs.. I gotta use them sometimes at work.. Although it is a unix based, i find them crash prone and that it just takes me longer to get things done on it. I always see girls carrying around these mac notebooks like a fashion accessory. I find it humorous.

Sure they can make a nice server, but so can linux, and it's alot cheaper.

I would like to try OS X also, but I don't have the money or time to do that at the moment.

Funny thing is...at my university lab during lunch hours everyone is lining up for a PC computer while am the smart one to take a MAC. This semester they upgraded to OSX and to tell you the truth its like a totally new version of MAC OS. love it.

-Will never switch over though....but would be nice to have a ibook sitting on the bed doing websurfing.

You've tried OS X then? You must have really given it a good try if you prefer 98SE to it

I am interested in checking it out also. I see them using it on the Screensavers and it looks like something worth while to learn.

I had this terrible dream last night.

I had to go to a friends house. Actually, a guy I was great friends with in grade school who had a Macintosh back in the mid 80's, but anyway. I was at his house, and there were all these friends I had like 10 years ago there. I really needed to get some e-mail, I don't know why. For some reason, I couldn't figre out OS X (not sure why his dad's 1986 Machintosh suddenly turned into a G5, but anyway)
I just kept typing, trying to access the net, but it just came up onthe screen as garbage...like the letters on the keys didn't match what was actually coming up on the screen.

The worst part was, just as I was about to crack the "code", my wife busted into the room and woke me up (btw, I was sick from work this morning)

I've been puzzled all day, and have had this strong urge to get a Mac

Welcome to the club!

<-- Runs a 5.4 lb one-inch thick PowerBook with built-in DVD burner and 15" widescreen. :D

And oh yeah, OS X.3 Panther of course. ;)
Exposé rocks!

I've tried it, not in depth but I didn't need to. I didn't see anything great about it. And this:

I would like to try OS X also, but I don't have the money or time to do that at the moment.

says you didn't try it yourself.

Hmm, well it has on many occasions, not that this is unusual for any OS, but i find the interface to be buggy at times. The little loading mouse cursor spinning endlessly when opening up some apps, especially with browsers. Strange carbonlib errors. I find myself going to the shell alot and killing processes to fix things up.

Also I absolutely hate Finder.. I dunno, maybe things have improved with panther.

I prefer Panther over Windows XP Pro.. though I'm still learning how to use it [thus, I'm still vastly superior at using XP over Panther].

Love my iBook G4. :D

I'm looking to get a 12" Albook, eventually will switch over. Virtual PC should be fine for me (That and the 1700+ in the closet I could VNC to if I really need windows)

I'm sad too say my next computer will probably be a mac :( They edit video so smoothly. I hate a lot of things about OS 10 though: File directories opening sideways instead of vertically, having to drag everything to the trashcan instead of pressing delete, Programs opening in windows instead of taking the whole screen up, the funky bar at the bottom that doesn't cover the entire bottom, no start menu, various other things. There are probably ways around some of these things, but we can't change settings on the lab computers.

I'd love to have one of the 12" laptops just to have as a spare machine or to have something portable like that, but they're rather expensive. I like the OS interface alot. If Apple ever changes their business plan and stops selling HW, I'll actually buy this OS and have it on every family computer I support. I'm a Linux user, so I'm all for having a multitude of options in the OS realm.

"File directories opening sideways instead of vertically" - set the finder to List View instead of Column View

"having to drag everything to the trashcan instead of pressing delete" - Select a file and press Cmd+Delete

"Programs opening in windows instead of taking the whole screen up" - Yeah, that's just the way OS X is.

"the funky bar at the bottom that doesn't cover the entire bottom" - You can move it to the left or the right side, or set it to automatically hide off the edge of the screen, if you like.

"no start menu" - Well, I don't really see the problem with that, as that's what the 'funky bar at the bottom of the screen' is for - you put your shortcuts down there and then you don't need to navigate through a menu to launch your applications. But no, there's no start menu equivalent.

You can use Command-Delete(the backspace key on Windows) to send files to trash without draging them.
