So I want to set up VPN *without* a VPN Router

When I explained to my Dad exactly what VPN was and how it would let him get to the company network from anywhere he was really, really interested. I said I'd set up a VPN connection if I could. The only problem is that I highly doubt the router at the company is a VPN router. (It could be, but let's assume it isn't) I know there's a way you can set up software to enable a VPN connection to an entire network, but I have no clue where to start, other than looking for stuff on sourceforge. What do I have to do in order to get a VPN connection set up, and how difficult will it be?

Oh yeah, is the XP built-in VPN connection option sufficient for the "client" software, or should I consider something else.

The company has a Sonicwall Firewall Router. Looks like they do have hardware VPN support. That makes my job easier.

Do you know what model of the Sonicwall router your dad's company has? Unless they have the higher end model routers, there's a limited amount of VPN tunnels allowed.

It will have to be set up on the Sonicwall by the company's IT department before your dad can use it to connect to it with a VPN client.

Good news, I'm the IT department. 😛

I'm not sure what model it is, but we really only need one tunnel active at once, maybe two.

Well then, just enable, uh, GroupVPN I think it is called and set the preshared key. Then download the GlobalVPN client from www.mysonicwall.com (I assume you have an account set up there). I would suggest not bothering with the l2tp support on the SonicWALL. I spent weeks pouring over every SonicWALL document I could find on their vpn in order to get l2tp to work, but to no avail.
