should i just get anything cheap? looks like cheapest i see online is about 350, didnt see any on craiglist but squatting is kinda hard with out it so i do front squats or awkward ones and dont put bar down between sets ;/ About to do another 35 of them right now and would be nice if i had power rack =P.. maybe its called something else when i search? im a newb

You should expect to pay at least $300 for a new power rack. Craigslist is a good way to find cheaper used ones. Just stay on the lookout.

If you're really on a budget, you could get a set of squat stands, like these $140 ones that have a safety catch attached:

Alternatively, if you're handy, you could make your own squat stands or even make your own squat rack:

The concrete buckets design doesn't work. Even if you put two bars out the front, it's not actually stable enough, because they'll tip.

i already decided against it but im sure it would work, you ever felt a bucket of concrete? its not going anywhere.. prob more stable than the bars

Craigslist is the best way to find a rack. I found my rack for $80 and it was beat to hell but added to the dungeon look in my basement. The rack is stable and can hold a ton of weight. I never had a problem with it even when slamming the bar off it.

I got the cheaper one from NY Barbell and I'm happy with it. I didn't have the patience to wait for one on craigslist.

If money is tight, craigslist or a wooden one is the right choice though. I feel safe in the rack knowing that I'm protected in case something goes wrong.

Note that the cement buckets is just a squat rack to hold the bar in the right place prior to starting squats or presses. It doesn't protect you at all. The other wooden one appears to be a full rack, just made out of wood. I'd think that if built well, like the picture looks like it is, it should be fine for several hundred pounds for an average lifter. You'd have to watch the wood for cracks & damage but it should last many years if not abused by dropping bars, etc.

You ever felt a well-loaded bar? It's going wherever it wants, and those concrete buckets won't deter it in the slightest.

R-3 or R-4. They're more expensive than the common $300 one, but they have 1 inch holes in the bench region and 2 inch holes above it...so you can put the safety pins above your neck but below your chest and never get into a position you could hurt or kill yourself. It also has band attachments.

Its also made in america, great customer service.

So expensive, and then shipping on top of that. But you're right, Westside design is great, and Rogue makes really nice toys.

Yes i agree the concrete buckets are just for stand i didnt expect it to be great protection etc.. im not looking to squat 6x my body weight just want to get some better than what i doing now with no rack at all... already order the one on amazon im sure it will be fine worst case i just drop the weights dont see it being a big deal..

I never use spotters or anything either just dont anchor the weights on the ends so can dump them if needed and havnt needed to you..

So much for your theory of just setting the weights down gently.

Regardless of how much you put on, the power rack lets you work to failure safely - either reps or weight. If you look on youtube of guys breaking their arms benching and pulling their quads squatting and whatever, you may see that the spotter arms or safety pins might save your life if you work out alone. Put the pins below your chest, but above your neck, and you can go for PR's all the time.

Im torn on the R-3 or S-3 as to what to buy myself for christmas, but either way i can push myself alone without a spot.
