Get a used car. New cars are the biggest waste of money on the planet.

You can either get a new car for $20,000 and hope it's a good one, or you can buy a used car for $2,000 and get 10 tries to find a good one.

10 tries, but you want to be stranded on the road 10+ times when before you make the next try?

you can get really nice car for $20k, i got a fully loaded accord 4cyl for $21

While obviously the OP isn't going to be a car expert, you can get a super-reliable car for $2k. Certainly more reliable than some brand-new $20k cars.

Not having a driver's license is probably a bigger hurdle than getting the car right now.

Thank procrastination for that. Any idea how long it'll take to get one?

I went from permit to license in 48 hours exactly. I got my permit Tuesday at 10AM, drove around that day and Wed, and then went in and took my license test on Thurs at 10AM. Passed my first time and that was that. I've been driving ever since, about 2 and a half years now, no accidents, no tickets (except parking, the university parking patrol gives no mercy). I was 19 at the time. This was done in the California mind you, not sure about other states.

Good luck to you though. Driving is my favorite hobby, if not a bit expensive now :( And I agree, go with used. Cheaper insurance (you'll be a new driver), if you F it up parking, driving, etc you won't feel as bad, if other people F it up parking, driving, etc you won't feel as bad. Also because your new, you may not know how to take care of of it ;) Imagine going out on your first date and its with Jessica Alba; would you be ready and know what to do?

You really should consider going to a driving school, you know the "Student Driver" cars you see around. It sucks yes, but you will learn a LOT about the rules of the road *and* more importantly how driving really flows (e.g. watch for people who look like they are going to change lanes, turn in front of you, etc.).

Please don't get that license without some professional training :)
