So I thought my GF's uncle was a computer nerd...

My GF is renting the 3rd floor suite of her uncles house. Her uncle is the computer nerd in the family and works in the aerospace industry.

Anyway, he has a wireless router set up so that the she can get internet access on the 3rd floor.

Her signal strength is not very good <50%. I decided to update the drivers on the off chance that that might help (the current ones were the ones from the driver CD).

Got them installed, then looked at the properties of the connection. The signal is not encrypted.

Then I look at the IP properties for the connection to find out the gateway IP for the router. I get the address and go to it.

I log in with admin/admin! unbelieveable! (this guys nerd credibility has just gone WAY down).

I look at the firmware version on the router and it is something like version 2.07, and the current firmware is 4.20.

I'm very disappointed. I left some instructions with my GF to give to her uncle.

🙁

Not all of us invest the same amount of time into all aspects of our technical lives. I haven't even modified my hiking boots yet, or upgraded the laces. Go figure!

you're still using factory laces?

haha, n00b! 😛

hey!~ Im his neighbor. turn the internet back on!

anywho,
- my wireless isnt encrypted, but i have MAC authentification turned on.
- Im still using the default passwd, but since no one else can connect but me it really doesnt matter.
- firmware probably needs an update, but it works and id ont really give a fvck.
- who cares what the timezone on my router is, it doesnt timestamp my emails or my webpages.

you are the man now dog.

he's got better things to do than spend time configuring his router.. i'm sure he intentionally pulled the router out of the box.. plugged it inbetween his modem and pc.. ran the setup wizard, and bam, done.. back to engineering.. i could care less about people using my internet.. please, feel free to surf the web, as long as you're not hogging my bandwidth..

i dont think i have ever updated the firmware for a router or cable modem

I did but only because I had a problem.

Normally I don't fix what ain't broke. Firmware and bios updates don't get done unless I have issues with the hardware.

Agreed.
