So I thought my GF's uncle was a computer nerd...

My GF is renting the 3rd floor suite of her uncles house. Her uncle is the computer nerd in the family and works in the aerospace industry.

Anyway, he has a wireless router set up so that the she can get internet access on the 3rd floor.

Her signal strength is not very good <50%. I decided to update the drivers on the off chance that that might help (the current ones were the ones from the driver CD).

Got them installed, then looked at the properties of the connection. The signal is not encrypted.

Then I look at the IP properties for the connection to find out the gateway IP for the router. I get the address and go to it.

I log in with admin/admin! unbelieveable! (this guys nerd credibility has just gone WAY down).

I look at the firmware version on the router and it is something like version 2.07, and the current firmware is 4.20.

I'm very disappointed. I left some instructions with my GF to give to her uncle.

:(

unles he is in a city, or somewhere where ppl go wardriving, its not that necessary.

Anyway, yes, I wouldn't mind leaving my connection open for others. The point is though that he didn't leave it open intentionally. Everything on the router is default... including the timezone, which is 2 hours off :)

I did but only because I had a problem.

Normally I don't fix what ain't broke. Firmware and bios updates don't get done unless I have issues with the hardware.

WEP is pointless and a hassle. If they don't live close to their neighbors or the street, who cares if its an open AP? Personally I lock down my network (and my parents) with domain authentication and a VPN (among other things) but my parents have 5 acres and live about .25 miles from the road. If they see someone sitting in the driveway on a laptop I'm sure they'll just call the cops.

and apparently some don't even care about strong passwords

As long as he has remote administration disabled (comes that way by default) and he doesn't allow remote root ssh, who cares? If it can't be accessed easily by someone else (physically) it doesn't really matter.

if the uncle already owns the entire house, than there is really no point to securing the network

I don't run security because with a brick house a little ways off the street, I can't get a signal very far outside the house even if I wanted to, and it sure doesn't get as far as the street.

eh, could mean he just doesn't care about the router thing. i mean, i almost never update my routers, or bother to change the pw or do anything like that cuz i just dont care. its like, why fix what ain't broke if your satisfied with current situation.

It would be awesome if you could just enter a simple password to get on your network... Why isn't this possible yet? And why does Windows make you enter the key TWICE? Why would you need to CONFIRM it when you're the one trying to get on the network? It's ridiculous.

Not all of us invest the same amount of time into all aspects of our technical lives. I haven't even modified my hiking boots yet, or upgraded the laces. Go figure!
