So I think the fireworks tonight exposed me as a racist and a xenophobe

So I went to the park to have BBQ with some of my friends

Didn't realize it when we were pulling in but basically the entire crowd at that location were people of european descent. Loud English music, lots of talking in English ..and 4th of July. That shouldn't bother me..but it made me feel uncomfortable for some reason. I mean, english isnt even the official language of the US, spooky stuff.

Very troubling...

Hispanic guys are hot. Learn to appreciate their sexy Latin charm.

also, if they are celebrating 4th of July, stands to reason they hold similar values to you, as you would all be us citizens (or wannabe us citizens).

No habla espanol?

Si, o "¿No puedas hablas español?"
I have one semester of spanish that I am rapidly forgetting 🙁

But generally hispanics are good people, if it is a public gathering just walk over and introduce yourself. I would rather mingle with hispanics than a group of rednecks 😛

Hey, at least you were troubled by your uneasiness. That shows you realize it was irrational.

The problem is you've not had much experience with that culture. We are all uneasy with the unknown, some more so than others. All you need to do is familiarize yourself with the positive side of Hispanic culture and that uneasy feeling will go away.

Its NOT irrational to be troubled by being surrounding by people of the other race. Its only human. The MAJORITY of people will segreate themselves by their backgrounds and will prejudice people by the color of their skin. MOST people just don't like people that are not "their kind" -- it works for blacks, whites, hispanics, yellow, purple, green,...

To be human is often to be irrational. Herding is irrational in our present society. Racism is irrational in our present society.

Note in my post I did not say it was unnatural, I said it was irrational.

I saw this White Power documentary on A&E and the whities were talking about how the blacks are taking over the world. That cracked me up because they really should be worried about the hispanic.

How come White Power are always talking about Blacks and Jews but they don't start a hate war against the hispanic?

I saw that show too. Those guys were seriously disturbed- so passionate about their views of hate, it was amazing that those kind of idiots still exist. What was worse was that they had little kids they were teaching to be racist. I cant understand how they thought they were superior when they all lived together in that ratty old shack in the middle of the woods. White Trash FTL!

What, like the horrible "entertainment" on Univision? You know that bumblebee guy on the Simpsons is meant to be a parody, but can he really be called a parody when he is an exact representation of their TV shows?😕

Hey they're just as proud of the American holiday as you are.... good for them. I'd much rather our immigrant population be out partaking in the culture of their new country... Thats how they become American...

I was actually barbecuing in Virginia right near DC as well, right near fort meyers. I was also surrounded by a bunch of spanish people. However that is because my GF is hispanic, her best friend is hispanic, and so is her sister and other friends that were there. I didn't feel uncomfortable at all 😛

And the people barbecuing right next to us were muslim. Get out a little bit more and you won't feel uncomfortable.

Man I used to do that every year... Setup along the GW parkway right by the memorial bridge... we'd get there at 8AM... hide the beer coolers, and start up the grills. We'd pack up everything at 8:30, and sit on our cars to watch the fireworks... immediately afterwards jumping into the cars, hightailing it out of there before the traffic got stupid... and off to a house party to drink til we passed out.

Now I'm just old... I stayed home... ordered pizza and watched the fireworks from my balcony.

Kinda sad really.

Hah ... yah we were right along 110 next to this bridge that crosses over into DC, right near Fort Meyers (I'm not sure of the exact location as I live in Maryland and not that familiar w/that area). We had our beers and liquor and were drinking with no worries a tall. There were kids lighting firecrackers off every 2 seconds and cops kept coming by and didn't say anything either. I guess they realized that we were just havin a good time and not bothering people. And there were many other people also barbecuing as well.

Yeah thats very very close to where we always used to setup. Cops were so on again off again... one year they didnt bother us at all... another year they confiscated a full cooler of beer and liqour... and one year they tried to tell us we werent allowed to grill at all. So we started hiding the liqour and started teh grills early... once they were cooking they couldnt stop us.

Next year! I will resurrect the tradition!

heh now that you mention it, my girlfriend and i were cracking up last night after the fireworks because of a few stereotypes that had been visibily/audibly fulfilled over the course of the night.

1) the entrance to the riverside had a wrought-iron fence bounding it-- most people were climbing over to get from their cars parked on the far side to the river. a pair of black kids decided this was too much effort, and walked to a portion of the fence that was chainlinked, and kicked the whole assembly down. almost as if it were second nature to them 😀 joke joke, but it was funny.

2) group of asian tourists spent the entire duration of the event with their backs turned to the fireworks, choosing instead to pose for a camera with peace-signs extended - the lights display as a background. oh, and they were all wearing yellow-shirts. to match one another. yeah. i'm half chinese, so i get it, but it was still terribly funny.

3) another pair of black, heavyset women seated close behind us yelled and bellowed rather obnoxiously for the better part of 10 minutes (after which time we moved). it was pretty incredible. they basically alternated bellows, taking care to cover all periods of what otherwise would have been silence. even when fireworks weren't in the air, they were still making noise. i couldn't quite make out what they were hollering about, but there was a lot of WAHHHHHH and WHOOOOOOOs going on, with intermittent periods of wheezing.

4) lastly, car alarms were going off all over the place, triggered by the shockwaves from the firework blasts. while wandering back to our car, overheard another black male mumbling "yo now would be the best time to steal sh!t", and receving a grunt of approval from his colleague.

funny stuff 🙂

You just weren't used to it. No big deal. People feel uncomfortable when thrust into surrounding which are foreign or different for them.

And anyways there is a culture shift going on now. July 4th celebration would have been expected to be BBQ, bandstand, and fireworks from before. Now, it isn't that way anymore.

You missed the part about the middle aged white people huddled close on their blankets looking very scared of all the dangerous minorities around them.

Well, I suppose General Hospital and One Life To Live are truly outstanding examples of American culture as well. Oh, and that Fear Factor show. Did I mention Wifeswap and The Nanny?

Don't get high and mighty about television culture. We don't have a leg to stand on.

Univision horrible? This coming from a country that is fascinated with watching "American Idol"? Give me a freaking break.

I think Univision and Telemundo have the hottest women on TV out of any channel at any given time.

Hell Yes. Flippin through the local stations at any time will tell you the spanish speaking stations have all the scantily clad women.
