Look, I know you guys probably think you're being funny. I can't believe I'm about to say this to someone who's nowhere near elementary school, but there are times to be serious and times to be funny. I would implore upon you to view this as one of those serious times.

Porn does not equal cheating.

Watching it 17-19 hours in a row would be cause for concern.

sounds like an addiction

It does. And a few websites classify it as addiction, such as this survey:

The pornography addiction interview

Pornography addiction and responsibilities: Do you neglect responsibilities to surf the Internet for pornography?

Progressive pornography addiction: Have you noticed that your need for pornography has increased over time?

Pornography addiction and relationships: If you are in a relationship, has your partner complained about being neglected?

Dependency and pornography addiction: If you are not in a relationship, have you ever felt that pornography is your one consistent companion?

Finances and pornography addiction: Do you wish you could stop spending so much money on pornography?

Obsession and pornography addiction: Do you have favorite pornography stars?

Real life and pornography addiction: Do you find that the more you use pornography the less interested you become in real life?

Shame and pornography addiction: Do you sneak or hide your use of pornography?

Loss of control and pornography addiction: Do you find that you cannot tear yourself away from pornography?

Effects of pornography addiction on relationships: Have you lost relationships in the past because of your pornography use?

Conflict and pornography addiction: Is a relationship you are in now threatened because of your pornography use?

Escape and pornography addiction: Do you wish that you could spend all your time watching pornography?

Alienation and pornography addiction: Do you feel that people do not understand your use of pornography?

Sexual impotency and pornography addiction, part I: Are you dependent on pornography as a stimulant for real sex?

Sexual impotency and pornography addiction, part II: Do you find that you can be sexual potent with pornography but not with a real person?

I'd say my dad takes 11/15 criteria there.

benny, your cracking me up... lmao.

On a serious note, maybe you could try to get him out of the house. Do some father and son bonding of some sort.

If all else fails just nuke his computer when he's not home.

I don't know what to tell you. This will not be good for your family. Pron can be highly addicting.

You need Windows Vista and its Parental Controls...CONTROL YOUR PARENT!

How long has this been going on? I bet he's been watching porn all his life but when did this become a cause for concern?
That level of porn-addiction is not a good thing at all. I would also snoop around a bit (cell phone records and IM logs) to find out how many hookers/swingers he is banging in his porn-free time.

Before all you privacy-zealots attack me, I think the OP has the right to know what his Dad is up to because this does sound like something that is bothering the family a lot.

I respect your desire to deal with this seriously... but where do we come in? I don't think your dad's level of porn addition is matched even on Anandtech. I can't really offer you any advice except to replace all of his porn with gay male porn. Or have some sort of intervention.

Well, I did have a gentleman suggest some things to me. I'm going to have to make some tough decisions I suppose. I do thank all of you guys for responding. I'm going to go sleep, but feel free to continue talking about it if you like.

I'd say addiction. I personally use pornography for its regular purposes. A few minutes later I'm done and have very little internest in watching any more.

I cant understand watching it for such extended periods of time.

I can't even physically understand how you could watch pr0n for that period of time. I mean I watch pr0n "sometimes", but darn, 17 hours would be several months worth, I litterally think my brain would just get numb to whats going on after an hour or so. And if your brain isn't numb by that time then your "other brain" probably is.

That is definitely pathological behavior. If you can, talking in confidence to someone with psychological experience would be a good idea(guidance counselor, psychologist, etc.)

The odds that you, personally, can do much about it are quite low. You are, I think, wise not to try pushing too hard. I don't really know how one proceeds in such a situation; but you really need to talk to somebody who does, as a first step.

Good lord! 17 hours? I lose interest after 10 minutes.

The porn is bad enough but hitting the chat rooms is another issue all together. If he's in there he miht be cheating on your mom for real...

I agree that Xonahbin was a trifle sharp in his reply; but let's cut him a little slack. He's just asked ATOT, of all places, for help with a really, really, thorny problem, it sounds like his mom's health isn't what it could be, and he's still young enough to be right in the middle of things.
