A lot of recent events and emotions from my life caused me to examine myself a little more. Anyways, how I act and feel pretty much matches the symptoms of bipolar disorder. How can I know for sure? Anyone currently suffering from this? Remedies?

If you honestly believe this you should go see a psychologist that has experience dealing with bi-polar disorder. It can be very serious and ruin your life and the lives of those around you if not treated properly.

If you are just kidding around here then you are a jackass.

If you're worried about it, you should probably see a doctor who'll give you meds. At any rate, it's usually good to see someone because sometimes things can aggregate and the "bad" end of the disorder can be really bad if it's not treated.

The funny thing about reading through DSM symptom lists is that, much like happens with medical students, after a while, it all starts to sound like it matches up with what you're personally experiencing.

Your best bet would be to speak with a qualified mental health professional if you truly feel that you're suffering from some type of psychiatric condition.

Maybe emotion swings , like when you go from happy for a few days to completely depressed is "normal". We all have our up days and down days.

Bi polar is more like being so depressed that you are crying non stop and unable to get out of bed. You would have violent mood swings through out the day. Then you would be so happy and energetic you would walk 10 miles, clean your house 5 times over, and become completely compulsive.

If you had bipolar disease, you would likely not be able to function in a normal society. Almost like an alcoholic would not.

this. my intro psych teacher told us about her manic depressive (bi polar) sister and the way the sis got when she was manic was insane. she actually convinced a small town that she had bought an old building and was going to open a business there and had the town planning a grand opening celebration for the place

that or my psych teacher was a compulsive liar.

No that is part of the illness. I worked suicide support for a few years and bipolar people can be really hard to figure out. I think I would rather talk to a straight depressed or psychotic person vs bipolar, it is easier to understand where the person might be coming from. Bipolar can be all over the place. I remember talking to someone who thought they were rich, had spent every dime they had in just over a day and was now depressed and couldn't understand why they spent the money knowing they couldn't afford to.

So I try to help them by telling them it wasn't their fault and get the response, it was my fault I was the one spending. If you tell them it was because they were sick it depresses them further. So I usually tried to get them help vs talk about why they were calling.

Okay, yeah the symptoms aren't as bad as wanting to kill myself every other day but it does seem to swing. For instance, before going to sleep I might think about all my shortcoming and how hopeless my life is and how no one will like me for me.... then the next day I might find out that there's a certain movie on cable and I will want to jump up and down for joy... is that about right or no? And yes I'm being serious.

Really it sounds more like depression. Bipolar is really extreme swings, like early in the morning you want to die then by afternoon you are cleaning the house and wanting to get married and throw a party. If you are having any thoughts of suicide or you are thinking about how you would do it, then please talk to someone like a counselor . Even if it is only some days.

You're "normal". People go through rough times. It's called life and we all face problems, question our purpose and existence, and feel hopeless. You're just going to have to find a way to dig yourself out, but I know how you feel. You're singling yourself out like you are the only one who has problems and are afraid to talk to others about them. Find some one to talk too - it won't be hard and you will be surprised how you can relate to other people.

normally people with this disease don't even know they have it. my first gf in hs had bipolar disorder, this was before i fully learned it in college and it was pretty intense. she was suicidal on some days, i'm talking about cutting herself with a broken piece of glass, then other days she would talk about marriage and having kids.

when she's on medication she was pretty normal. on days when she misses it (busy and forgets to take it), you can see the signs kicking in. they're small mood swings and slowly progresses to huge outbursts. it's the worse at night when she was alone in her room with her thoughts bouncing around the 4 walls.

you don't seem to have it imo, like others have said, probably anxiety or regular life problems.

also, the events that lead to this disorder is usually latent and happens when you're a child, stemming from abusive parents (sexual, alcohol, death)...anything psychologically traumatic that happens during the emotional/developmental stages of your life, and doesn't manifest till much later. some say it's genetics but there no conclusive evidence to support this yet.

you'll have to pass a DSM evaluation by a doc before you can get diagnosed with this illness then a treatment plan can be set up, therapy with meds depending on severity of mood swings.
