so i think i ran a traffic light this morning while leaving my place to pick up my dad. i was just about to enter the intersection when the light changed yellow and so i decided to try to gas it rather than stop dead in the middle. unfortunately it was a rather large intersection so i dont think i cleared it completely when it turned red. i was really stupid since is this intersection is about 5 min. away and i know that theres a camera (its actually on the opposite side of the street). how does the timing on these cameras work (will i probably get a ticket)? btw this is in NYC

i asked my mom (who was got caught by a camera years ago) whether its just a fine and points, which would then mean an insurance increase. but she said she only had to pay a fine. the nys dmv says points but since its a camera can they assume its the registered driver driving it? e.g. the car could have been driven by or lent to a friend.

ANSWER^

you will know if it takes a picture of you. almost all of the cameras have a flash and it is quite noticeable

how long does it take from the camera catching you to getting a ticket

Yeah you're fine. I've seen the flashes go off before and out here there's even a little bit of a delay. If you had already entered though you're fine like M4H said.

so if i'm already in the intersection (which i think i was since i looked above as i crossed) when its red i wont get ticketed? like i said before its a rather large intersection since iirc the light stops maybe about 5 ft from the corner and the the street intersecting the road is a two way street.

hmm... this camera doesnt flash..ive seen cameras that flash (where the flash comes from the red light lamp inself i think). but this is one of those tan mounted boxes with two holes in 'em. best way to describe it is it looks like a big bird house of some sort.

the street i was on is a 4 lane road (in addition to a lane on each side for parking...so i guess maybe 6 cars lanes/widths total) with a small grass island divider. the camera was mounted on the otherside of the street i.e. in the opposite direction.

I know what kind you're talking about, we've got several of those. I'm betting that you're fine man, I mean if you were fully in the intersection then it's not like you went on red.

if you are in the intersection when the light is red, you did not run a red unless you crossed the first iteration of lines when the light was red.

Being in the intersection when the light is red is blocking the intersection, a seperate ticketable offense.

edit: i should not that those cameras are red lights "runner" cameras. being in the intersection when the light is red is a red-light type of violation, but not what the cameras are [supposed to be] setup to capture; they are supposed to catch red ligth runners.

i hope what you say is true. but i guess i have to wait. the thing is the car is registered under my mom but i told her about it and she wasnt very upset since she had been ticketed like that before once.

from the nys dmv site :
"Failed to obey a traffic signal, a Stop sign, or a Yield sign" is 3 points. but i dont think they can do that since they dont know for sure who's in the car. unless these cameras can pick that up too

oh yes they do :)

from the pic they took you can clearly see the passanger and the driver, even though you can't absolutely extract/identify the person, you can still tell it was you that was in it. The judge will throw your case out Judge Judy style if you say "that wasn't me."

well if the ticket goes to my mom/dad since thats whom its registered to, then it isnt either of them.
