So I spoke with AOL "Live Billing Support" online...

and was told I would only be charged $50 if I were to cancel my account. I told him I was under the impression that I'd have to pay for the remaining months, but he assured me that I wouldn't--just the cancellation fee. So I cancelled my account, and now I'm being charged $179 (the price of 12 full months, even though I paid the first month of the contract already). Do you think there's any hope of getting this changed? I have a printout of the conversation, and I assume they keep them on record for a certain period of time as well, but maybe not.

Easy answer: What does the contract state that you signed?

Difficult answer: Are you willing to put in the time, effort, and money to fight a possibly losing battle if that contract stated a different amount than the live billing support person?

If you have a transcript of the conversation, I suggest you research "estoppel".

Guys, he obviously signed up with AOL for a rebate from Compusa. I remember on Black Friday, every damn thing said "AOL SPECIAL OFFER" and it pissed me off.

If you have the print out, I'm sure you can fight it. He was acting as a representative of AOL and therfore AOL is pretty much bound buy what he gave out acting as their agent since they hired him...

I don't think that would really hold up in a legal sense, but if you tell them about how you are so mad and would never use AOL again and never recommend it to your friends, you might have a case.
