So, I saw a tech make an enormous fsckup today

As you may or may not know, I work the helpdesk in a computer lab/office setting. They don't pay me enough to actually go fix anything, they have "technicians" who do that. A buncha really cool dudes. Anyway, they have a Linux rig behind the desk for adminning the Linux servers, dual-booted with Windows for adminning the Windows servers. Anyway, the tech on duty arrives, boots up Linux, busts open a console window and proceeds to SSH into one certain very important server. Logs in as root (can you see where this is going?) and does his business. He doesn't log off SSH when he's done. Goes and does something else for an hour (replacing a HDD, I believe, because when he returned, I was presented with a box to send back to Dell) and jumps back on that machine. He needs to admin Windows now - so he types init 6 (also known as "reboot") into the console. He sits there staring at the connection lost message and says to me "You're going to have enormous problems in about 30 seconds. Have fun" and runs off. Sure enough - about a minute later, the packed lab starts making quite a bit of noise and b!tching at me, and both phones start ringing off the hook. Oh dear lord. That machine apparently takes quite some time to reboot, too. It was almost 10 minutes before services were restored.

eck.

He's due for an ass kicking next time you see him.

That doesn't even BEGIN to describe. He ruined my perfect record for the day. I was going for "not doing anything" - unfortunately, my female coworker picked the wrong 10 minutes to go take a pee and missed the entire event - so I had to handle everything.

before he comes back on shift, take a dump in the case of the computer. if it get's nice and warm and has the fans blowing air out under a desk...he will figure it out

How is this a fvckup though? Because he forgot to logout as root?

he was still on the remote machine

he thought he was on the local box (the dual boot admin box, not the server) and did that to reboot the admin box to get into windows

but he still had the remote session open and rebooted the server instead of the admin box

If that's an enourmous fsckup, what would be doing a rm -rf * from root be called?

Fired.

And why in the name of satan would you actually do that, anyway?

Hey, I need to rid of those pictures very quickly and forgot which directory I was in.

that is why I would use a shell from a windows box. it works fine for me, and there is no way you would do that accidentally😉

Because:
#1: He logged in as root
#2: He left a terminal running while logged in
#3: He didn't check the prompt to make sure the command was going to the right system
#4: He fled the scene, leaving me to deal with it

I once got my head stuck in the railing going up our steps.
My Mom had to call the fire department to get me out.
