So I rented a car and got a Ford Fusion...

This car is awful. It does not drive smooth at all. There seem to be two modes of acceleration (idling and flooring it). The worst part is the way they designed the instrument panel. I cannot see any of the gauges during the daytime due to glare. I have no idea how fast I'm going while driving.

Anybody else have any experience with this piece of junk?

Why not? You're gonna spend more time with it and using it than any test drive.

Plus it has a little of wear-in. I want to know what the car is like after 5000 miles, not when brand new.

But I wasn't using the rental to test the car out. I just needed a rental car for the day while my car is in the shop.

That's a shame. I thought the 2010 Fusion I rented last year(AWD Sport) was one of the top ownable/affordable cars I've driven in a long long time. And I rent cars ALL winter(6+ months) and throughout the summer every year. Its a lot of well built car for what you pay.

I dunno about your assessment, my wife has a Fusion and loves it. She has a cousin who has one too, and she loves it too, or perhaps it is a chick car. I myself like the cabin space as a passenger, but can see how the acceleration isn't particularly good.

As for rentals, I think it is hit and miss. They are often treated like crap, I know a few friends that beat these things up as much as possible so they get their money's worth out of the "insurance".

OP you must realize that it's now part of the American consciousness to praise the hell out of the Fusion or the Focus. It's simply not patriotic to have any other view.

I was in one last year and it was ok. It was a mid size four cylinder car, meh, probably no better or worse than an Altima, Camry, etc. Something I did notice--I think--was that when it was floored the AC compressor would kick off. I swear the cold air would not blow while it was floored. Either it's a design feature or I was dreaming it.

Pretty much all modern cars (or at least those lower on power) kick off the a/c when you floor the vehicle to free up the engine from compressor drag.

The most ignorant post I have read.
Acceleration is comparable to other 4 cylinder sedans. Unless you are comparing a 4 cylinder to v6. Then I'd say you're stupid. Either way you are stupid.
Accords and Camrys aren't as good as their previous gen in relation to their competitors.
And FYI, most A/C compressors free up their clutch based on throttle position or load.
The more you know...

I rented one last year while on vacation. It wasn't bad. I would never buy one, but I've definitely had worse rental cars.

It was a decent car except for all the two things I mentioned in the OP. The glare on the instrument panel was a serious problem and I imagine all Fusions have it.

I've never heard anyone complain about that on a Fusion.

Either a troll thread (most likely), or the guy is a baller used to nothing more than Lexus LS, BMW 7, or the S-Class cars and above.

The '10+ Fusion is a class leader in the midsize segment, and is equal or better than Accord, Camry, Sonata, Mazda6, Optima, Altima, or Malibu. Honestly it's a great segment, but if I were shopping that segment, Fusion would be on my short list along with Altima w/5-speed (they're dirt cheap at the dealers around here, frequent deals floating around $12k for new old stock moderately equipped).

For reference, I drive an 11 year old Nissan Maxima, which is in less than optimal shape (I'm gonna get a new car in the next 6 months).

The Fusion was a nice a car. There were a few parts that seemed cheap and plasticy, but it was nice for the most part.

I love Maximas, they're a bargain used especially, you get a lot for the $ there.

I'm having trouble connecting your last comment with the OP though.

"This car is awful / piece of junk" =! "Was a nice car, nice for most part"

??

I can see legitimate criticisms for many things, and I'm sure Fusion isn't for everyone. That said it doesn't have any compelling weak spots compared to any of the other i4 entry-level midsize cars. You're probably a bit spoiled having experience with the VQ30 and copious power over a nice wide powerband. Fusion 2.5L (which is almost certainly what you had) is very much like any of the other 4-banger midsizers. There is a decent amount of weight, and it's not gonna be fast. It's adequate for running about, but yeah if you floor it you're going to get more engine noise than really much difference in perceived acceleration. That said, the fuel economy is great comparitively with the 4 pots.

If you really want to be blown away, check out the '10+ Fusion hybrid with the premium audio and interior. It really compares well to the luxury brands even.

When I say it was nice. It had a nice interior and a nice panel with plenty of gadgetry and knobs.

I did not enjoy driving it and the glare from on the instrument panel was awful. Even if I loved the car, the glare on the instrument panel would be enough to keep me from buying it.

I think you might owe Doppel an apology. He didn't say that the Fusion i4 was any better or worse performance wise with the other brands. If you meant this in reply to the OP, then I still think it's a bit harsh, but that at least might make sense.

ill support you on the instrument panel. but its not specific to the fusion . like 90% of cars have a poorly designed panel that sucks when its sunny out

the ford escape has this issue as well

I dunno. I drive my girlfriend's 96 Honda Civic which has about as much power as a lawn mower. It doesn't have much power, but at least I can accelerate smoothly in it.

I could not smoothly accelerate from a red light in the Fusion I rented. It was a very jerky experience. That may just be a problem with the particular car I had and not a problem with the Fusion in general.

I had a friend visiting about a week ago and he rented a Ford car as well. He was making similar complaints about the acceleration, which made me think that this was a problem with Ford cars in general.

No. He is making some stupid claims.
Saying it's only because of nationalism.
Re read his post.
Plus, this was originally posted in OT, where it's encouraged to rib someone.
