So I removed the detent out of the G7 scrollwheel...

This thing FLIES.

It's just a ball and a tiny spring.

Those of you old enough to remember the analog stereo receivers with those huge flywheel tuning knobs know what I am talking about.

A good flick sends the wheel moving and long pages fly off the screen!

Sounds annoying

No actually the ratcheting of the original was very annoying. Rapid scrolling was about as loud as spinning a cheap chinese 3/8" ratchet wrench by the knob...

The ball is very small caliber, probably .100 or so. Ditto for the spring. Sorry no pics.

EDIT:

I can probably shoot a video of this (scrolling) and u/l it in a bit. 😀

wait how do you take this apart? i took the screw out but i cant take it apart

Check for additional screws hidden beneath the mouse's "feet"

Four screws - one under a sticker which is probably the one you removed.

The others are found under the very front and back feet. Be careful when removing them so that you do not separate the adhesive from the teflon. An exacto knife works well but still it is a PIA compared to most mice.

hmm, might not be good for switching weapons in FPS.

Yes it would suck for that.

If one could somehow bind the wheel to a run like hell function that would be nice. Probably considered cheating though.

actually i was just playing DOD with it adn its fine

I just overclock my mouse with the little slider ball under Start --> Control Panel --> Mouse.

😛

Ok so the novelty wears off when trying to switch weapons. (how did I EVER get suckered into playing FPS games I will never know hehe)

I clipped the spring so it's not as long and put it and the ball back. The click is there but much more feeble than stock. Too bad this cannot be changed in software. If a closed encoder was used and filled with a variable viscosity fluid (changed with electrical bias, for example) it would be possible to go from flywheel zoom to stiff (sans new MS mice) but the click would have to be simulated by some other means. Perhaps a retractable beveled wedge similar to the brake used on CDE beam rotators but...but...the cost$$$ argh! :frown:

Mice are getting far too complicated IMHO. I like my old Logitech Wingman Gaming Mouse, 3 buttons and used a ball.

That's why there are plenty of them to choose from.

Just got my G5 today, the scroll wheel is quiet as hell, very soft turning on it. I absolutely LOVE the ability to switch DPI resolutions with a button click, I go from 800 to 2000 and back again like it's nothing, I do miss my forward button though 🙁
