So I registered at fedex.com for an account

So, i registered a fedex account because I was planning to ship a few packages via fedex... figuring it would be easier to purchase and print the labels online.

Not only does fedex have one of the worst web interfaces ever for registering, the bastards charged me $10 on two back to back transactions for no apparent reason. I used my paypal debit card to sign up, and it took funds out of my paypal account, so it's not that big of a deal. But $20 is still $20.

What I'm wondering is... is this standard practice that they put a hold on money to make sure it's a real account, or is this some obvious error. I know a lot of places will put a hold on some of your money, but it's usually never more than a $1.

Anyway, I'm in no real rush to call them... I'll probably do that tomorrow, but I still sent them an email, hopefully they'll clear it up.

Or if all else fails, maybe I can file an unauthorized transaction in paypal, heh.

They do that when you open an account. Its a pending charge and will clear in 7-10 days as they told me its just a hold and to verify. Also they have a habbit of charing $1 a day for a week to make sure they go through. All refunded of course. Fedex is a pain to get started with.

they still are trying to collect 50 bucks from me via multiple collection agencies when i sold a laptop to some b!tch in canada who never paid the customs tax. and now they default it to me because i was the shipper, i told them to buzz off. they dont have my SSN, what can they do to my credit anyway...

good thing they cant hold my shipments, all i have to do is never use them again to ship things

it's not the 50 bucks, its the principle of it, how am i responsible for canadian customs tax? im american!

Ah.. ok.

It would've been nice for them to mention that they'll do a charge like that... especially because not everyone who uses a debit card has $20 bucks in the account.

Personally, I don't mind if they put a hold to verify because I'm used to a few services doing it for monthly billing, but it was usually never more than $1-$2.

They can get your SSN if they wanted to and tarnish your credit.

i doubt they can obtain the number through legal means

and it's only 50 bucks, would they spend the manpower to get 50 bucks? they're how many billion dollar company? i do have my credit score checked once in a while, don't see any weird inquiries recently, so i believe they are not going to do anything, but if they do, and put the 50 dollar delinquicies, with my high score how would that affect my credit score much? other companies inquiring would probably think that its a missed bill or a bill sent to wrong address anyway (which is true, they are sending bills to my previous address, not my current one)

i tried arguing with them, all i get is an angry CSR who thinks i cheated them money WTF. i'll never use them to ship stuff. die fedex. but please keep delivering my packages. :p

I had someone ship something to China using my fedex account... $120 or so charged right to my AMEX

When i contacted fedex, they took the charge off, but they acted like it happened all the time, someone just put the wrong number down. Still, wasted my time getting the charge removed AND had to wait over a week for the charge to be removed. Needless to say, i cancelled my account shortly thereafter.

Bastages! Ive had a shipping account with UPS for several years now and never paid for more than shipping.

Demand a refund or close the account.

Exactly, they are a multi billion dollar company, meaning they probably keep people on retainer that can pull your SSN at the snap of a finger. But since they haven't chosen to ruin your credit thus far, it's probably safe to say that they won't. But don't mistake inaction for inability.

Getting a SSN or tarnishing a consumer's credit file is not as hard as you think...no one needs to be on retainer. There are many solutions that allow someone to plug in a name/address and get ssn, criminal record, etc. When I did consultation work for a law office, they had such an application and it was relatively inexpensive and they could get information on practically anyone.

yea, i've had a ups account as well (mostly for the free shipping labels, but I do ship from the account as well), and I have never seen other charges than what was the charge for the shipment.

They didn't put a hold on anything... none of that. But apparently FedEx assumes everyone uses a credit card...meh. I need to stop using debit cards.

I think UPS is 9.99 or $10

They regularly charge $1 to check if the CC still works for people who don't pay

I also have a UPS account and have never been charged anything other than for shipments.
