I tried selling my laptop on eBay 4 different times. Each time the person who "won" the auction was some scammer that sent a variation of what you posted. Craigslist was no better. I ended up selling it locally.

You know, thats what I was afraid off... I sold many things the past few month, mostly RDRAM and sold all w/o problems. Sold old cpu, etc, etc. I guess they dont want parts.. only notebook..

yep, that scam is still around. i put a ps2 for sale on ebay awhile back and i got about 5 responses exactly like that.

I've sold one laptop on ebay. A few days into the auction I had a guy from Indonesia offer me $3000 + shipping to end it early. Obviously I didn't.

The only thing more sad than these scammers are the people that give them hope.

for people that don't use ebay what are some good tips for starting to sell?

-don't accept money orders
-don't mail out of the country
-don't accept anything from western union

etc?

'accept' and 'except' are different words.

What's wrong with money orders and western union?

I smell a scam. 😀

j/k

O as for BriGy86, money orders are fine.
When you ship out of the country try not to accept money orders and make sure their PayPal address is confirmed (wait PayPal sucks and won't allow most countries to have a confirmed address. So scratch that.)
BidPay is dead so there isn't a good method of receiving money from overseas people.
For me I accept non confirmed PayPal funds and still ship it as I have not been scammed yet.
For within the U.S. PayPal (confirmed address) and cash are your safest method of receiving money.
If you think it is a scam wait 1 or 2 days before shipping it so PayPal might catch the "fake" money.

Beaware there are lots of scams howering around on ebay. Last month i bought Pioneer DVD navigation from ebay for $200, a guy from china, after than never heard from him.

And still there are so many more on ebay.

Just looked at your listing. It is one of the most descriptive and time consuming listings I have ever seen lol!

These scams survive because of forged Money Orders, Cashier's Checks, Certified Checks, etc. Your bank will take them in deposit and it can take up to two weeks for your bank to get back in touch with you to tell you (1) the instrument was a forgery, (2) they are debiting your account for the amount deposited, and (3) you are responsible for any fees (usually returned checks from your writing checks on amounts from the forged instrument credited to your account).

There are really two ways the scam works. The first is the simpler, they send you a forged/counterfeit check/money order and you send the item. You find out a few weeks later the check/money order is bogus and by then the buyer is long gone (and your laptop is most likely being used in a Nigerian Internet Cafe to scam even more people.) The second is a bit more devious. The buyer tells you he has a money order/certified/cashiers check already filled out and it is for more than the item you're selling. He will send you the check, and you should Western Union wire him back the excess followed by the item you are selling. You get the check, wire him back the extra, then find out two weeks later the check is bad and you are out the "extra" you sent. A derivation of this is the shipping scam - similiar as above but the buyer wants you to handle the shipping for him. You guessed it, he adds the shipping to the check and you are to wire it to the "shipping agent". The check comes back bad and you are out the "shipping expense", really just another way to get you to send cash to him.

They are getting better and better at it too.
