So, I ordered the BFG 7800GTX from Dell

And as it turns out, the order status now shows that the shipping date is 7/25/05!!!

I guess I can wait a little bit to play the latest games, but I would need a stopgap solution. The board; K8N-DL has only PCI and PCIE slots, since I don't really have a PCIE card in my inventory, I looked elsewhere.

I had one Trident PCI card from eons ago, which I have no idea whether it still worked. So for insurance, I snatched another PCI video off ebay:
ARK-STEALTH64-2001

Does anyone know where I can actually get anywhere close to decent driver for this card? I have no idea how this card is going to "perform"; I would be very happy if it can handle the bit-maps on a WinXP GUI. 4MB, yes 4MB of VRAM. lol

Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

And does anyone think I should cancel the order from Dell, and go with someone else? There are a few vendors that have prices that come close, but not quite as good as Dell.

He, he, if this is the way it's going to be, at least it will really feel like an "upgrade" when it actually comes, going from a 2001 4MB card to the 7800GTX. LOL, LOL.

Why on earth did you order one from Dell?!?!?! I hope you got a good discount. Neweg would have been faster.

There are no XP drivers for those PCI cards you mentioned. A better choice would have been a geforce series PCI card.

Dell had the 7800GTX's for $491 (+tax, but with free shipping) if I remember correctly, so I'd say he got a good deal. 😉

I saw the deal the day after I payed full retail!

I really wouldnt expect it even two weeks from now. I can still remember all the X800 horror stories from dell.

If you dont mind waiting a month or two, then by all means keep the order, but if you have that itch now, Id say go order it from somewhere else. The MSI one is $535 somewhere and a PNY one is $550 at zzf.

I never try and get in on deals like this because hundreds if not thousands of other people are also trying to get in and you spend months waiting for it. The extra $100 is worth it if I can have it right now. I'm not getting any younger. Time is money. By the time you actually get that card prices at places like newegg may have already dropped to that point. Good luck and enjoy the card when you get it.

But wait!

Aren't all the ATI faithful yelping "Fools! You should have bought one for $500 from Dell!"

LOL- it seems they don't remember the beating they took with the X800XTPE deal from Dell last year, how 4 months later guys were posting, "I'm still waiting for my uber cheap card from Dell!"

I hope that really doesn't become the case, but you never know.

I will give them a ring on Monday, and if it turns out that they can't give me a guarrantee on the delivery date, then I will cancel right away. I don't want any part of the waiting game. I prefer real, I mean simulated games 😉

Or you can try to get free stuff or coupons from them. Just call and complain and ask for coupons. 😀

You should stay away from that cookie than 302EFI- as it can be considered "food" and you can be considered a "troll"?

what ya do is order a whole puter from Dell, a really sh!t hot high spec one in all areas, except the graphics card.....then, once the puters being shipped, phone up and get thru to the same agent, tell him you been a numbskull and forgot to add a decent graphics card, seeing as you spent so much on the puter what deal can he do you on the card? he's obviously gonna sort you out a good price if you didnt haggle him down on the actual puter....and u'll go on priority for getting the card, unlike when you just do a totally lone order for a card.....

then, once both puter and card have arrived, send back the puter under the 30 day distance selling regulations and keep the card 🙂

hehe

the downside is, under your name and address on Dells computer will most likely be a note 'In Future DONT TRUST THIS BASTARD IF HE ORDERS A PRICEY SETUP!'....lol

The x800s were not availible in large quanities from newegg either. Hopefully, with nivida's real time launch, dell has alot in their warehouses.

Toss that line a little farther. How you can pretend to not be bias is beyond me.

I don't pretend or even say I'm not- nVidia has had better products for the last year, I'm "biased" toward them if you mean that's all I will recommend. IMO it's pretty lame to sit on the fence and say, "Well, I wouldn't want to appear biased, so I have no opinion."

Unlike most, I buy both ATI and nVidia 1st or 2nd best card every generation and try them, which seems fair to me.

I was just telling my wife at dinner tonight I'd be buying a R520 when they're released. (yes, video cards are discussed at my dinner table on occasion- just like my other hobbies and hers)

Even though that R520 seems to be going in the 32 pipes direction, I 'm not sure that it will be worth it to wait for another 4-6 months for them to be released and come in good volume.

I could buy a low end 6200 or something, and wait for the advent of the R520, but that would mean I would have to have a substandard machine for months. I can only deal with what's actually on the market right now.

Do you know where I can get a GFX PCI card cheap for a stop gap solution?
