So I ordered DSL today.

I've been using internet service provided by my apartment complex since I moved in. It sounds nice on paper, but it sucks in real life. I'm supposed to have access to a T1 line, which you think would mean I'd get 1.5mbps both up and down, which is pretty good for $35/month. However, when it's working, I really get about 500kbps, which is still symetrical, but it's slow. The biggest problem is that it's flakier than hell. It goes down at LEAST 2 or 3 times a day, for anywhere between 5 minutes and 3 hours, and it's often running at about the speed of dialup.

I got fvcking sick of it, so 3.0/384k DSL is being installed next tuesday, for $36.99/month. I'll finally have an internet connection that's reliable.

Cable > DSL

😛

Cable's not available at my apartment.

I used cable for 4 years. It was fast, but unreliable, and the provider put more and more restrictions on it's use.

I've been on DSL for about a year now, and it's almost as fast, has rock solid stability, and very few restrictions on it's use.

Verizon? Don't believe the Sh!t on tv. I got a really slow connection at 185 dl and/40 up. You should ask your neighbor how fast their dsl before buying.

Maybe I'm a geek but when I was looking for places to move, the first requirement was that the place have cable internet.

Depends where you are. In my area (outside of Toronto, Canada), DSL is much superior to cable. I consistently get about 2.4 Mbps download, 0.64 Mbps upload. With cable, too many people have it in my area, and I was getting max 1.4 Mbps download, 0.32 Mbps upload (usually a lot less though, more like 0.7 down, 0.16 up).

DSL rules!

EDIT: yes I know it's actually ADSL

My dad has the same service (in a different city, though), and gets the full rated speed. We'll see how well they do at my place.

Congrats, notfred. Good luck w/the DSL.

Like your situation, cable's not available in my apt complex either. The entire area is wired for Cox cable...the entire area...except my complex.

When I asked the owner "How come you didn't get the place wired for cable?" His response "Because QWest paid me a LOT of money not to!" He was dead serious too.

*shrug* My DL is about 1/2 the speed of what the local cable user gets, but my UL speed is almost symmetrical with my DL. 😀 150KB/s down AND up ain't bad at all. 😎

Why is it that apartments offer T1 and it's shitty, but no lawsuits or anything are done about it? I mean yeah it's expensive, but it could pave the way for reform. Maybe a law could be made saying that if you're going to offer/charge for it, you have to be giving so much bandwidth to each person.

.. I've been thinking of dsl too..I got 2 ethernet cards for my boxes and am less then a mile away from the phone hub..I can get dsl for 26.oo a month..not shure how stable that price is..but everybody keeps telling me cable's better..but more expensive..if Im that close to the hub..wouldn't ya think dsl would be good?

my apartment complex has the same thing (a shared T1). I went with DSL from the beginning. It will be the same price, and i don't have to deal with the 'tards in my complex. I hate qwest, but i don't have much of a choice.

Ashame. Not quite here yet either, though deployment is suppossedly taking place for roll out between February and June. Sub $50 for 15Mbit/2Mbit is quite a deal.
