So I need to get a semi-heavy coat for moderately cold tempertures

I don't have a heavy coat. I have never had one since I've lived in central Texas. You don't really need it. I usually just throw on a light coat and I'm good to go, provided I'm not outside for more than 30 minutes or so. But now that i'm outside a lot more and I need something heavier. I want something that can keep you warm if I go on a hike or something, but something still nice enough to wear to a night out. I was probably thinking wool, since I don't need a mountain expedition jacket, but wind stoppage is more important than breathability - my current light fleece coat SUCKS at stopping wind.

I realize winter is almost over, but I've endured being cold far too long. Hopefully I can get something on sale too.

EDIT: BY the way, I have a relatively heavy but unlined leather coat. It's too bulky, I want something lighter. Budget is at or less than $200.

Have you tried windstopper fleece? It works well enough for me. My only heavier coat is a big-ass down jacket for below zero temps.

:thumbsup: Well fitted thermals (I have plain-jane cotton ones, they have [nicer] microflece ones nowadays) will go a long way in keeping you warm without having to have an unecessarily bulky jacket/sweater and what have you.

I sometimes walk around in a T-Shirt. when there is no wind of course. Helps if you have a BIG layer of body fat.

For the best versatility, get a parka with a gore-tex shell and a zip in fleece liner. L.L. Bean used to make good ones.

Still in, but don't buy a cheap one. Look for something made from wool, or cashmere if you can afford it. Avoid buying a size too big. The coat should hit at your high hip and the cuffs shouldn't cover your hand.

I 2nd the leather jacket. I wear mine all the time.

edit: look around at mall stores, I got my leather jacket that was originally $200 for $100 at LS Ayres.
