Hello Anandtech. So my old Viewsonic 17in CRT monitor just died recently and I'm in the market for a new LCD monitor. Was hoping someone could help me out.

I read the "LCD thread" but there are sooooooooo many choices. How do I pick?

I intend to do some TF2, WoW and movies.

I live near Fry's, Best Buy, Office Depot, Circuit City and Staples so I will probably get whatever is available at those stores. Seems like Fry's has the largest selection.

Can anyone recommend something thats around the $200 price range? Or at least point me in the right direction? Any brands I should avoid?

Thanks!

What do you guys think about this one?

I picked up a 20" Westinghouse LCD at Target a month or so ago for $135! Regular ~$220. I was unsure of the brand, seeing as how they aren't known for computers.. but they've been around since the 1800's so I figured they know their stuff. It's a really really nice monitor and i'm very pleased with it. I dont think I would pay $220, but if you can still find it for under $200 i'd definitely recommend it. Native resolution is the weird 1440 but I don't mind it. Response is 5ms but games are great and i've noticed no ghosting or anything. Just crispness.

It was one of these in the list: http://www.target.com/Westingh...-Monitor/dp/B000PDD130

BTW, out of that list I would go for the Samsung for 199. That viewsonic is refurbished, I would steer clear. The LG looks nice but seems overpriced.

I currently use a 24" lg and it's the nicest one I've had yet. You won't go wrong with the lg however the samsung is also a nice unit. Just set a price ceiling for yourself and get the best unit in that range.

Thanks to everyone who replied! I pretty much went with the idea of the biggest I could get at a cheap price mentality. In the end I would notice the size more than the picture quality imo.
So I ended up getting a Viewsonic VX2240w from Fry's. http://shop3.frys.com/product/...WM7S65Q+PZkCLugNBWrfEg**.node2?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
It was on sale for $269.99 and $219.99 AR. I think the sale ends Tuesday for anyone whos interested. Rebate goes til the 30th. This is in San Diego btw.
Also came with a free AR Canon photo printer IP2600 http://shop3.frys.com/product/...WM7S65Q+PZkCLugNBWrfEg**.node2?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Pretty much happy with the screen. It fits on my desk peeeeeerfectly. A bit of backlight bleeding at the top and bottom but not so much that I would notice. Slight ghosting but not enough to distract me. Text seems sharp to me.
Colors seems pretty good to me but then again I'm no photo expert. Havent noticed any banding issues yet.
Main thing for me was that it tilted downwards enough so that I can see from my bed without the picture going dark. Only downside is the lack of height adjustment but thats no biggie as well.

I can take pics if anyone is actually interested in seeing it.

PS:
After buying the Viewsonic, I noticed Circuit City sells the Samsung 226BW for $203.96

Does anyone highly recommend the Samsung over the Viewsonic?

Update:
So the monitor developed a slight ticking or clicking sound after 3 days of use. Seems to be loudest after first turning it on, then it fades away after about 5 min or so. If I turn the brightness up to 100 or to 0 it goes away. Its not so noticeable because the sound of the cars going by outside my house drowns it out.
Is this normal and part of the break in process? Should I be concerned and get an exchange?

I have no idea what is going on with the ticking. Does it have internal speakers? I would just take it back to frys if thats where you got it and swap it out. If you have issues now, just swap it out. I would have done that with my acer, but newegg is being a pain in the ass about the return policy.

I would take the view sonic is HANDSDOWN over the samsung. And I LOVE my samsung TV, but for monitors, I have never had good experience with them. And I never would have upgraded from my old 19 in viewsonic if I didnt need to have something that was HDCP for my PS3.

No internal speakers. Just a plain old monitor.
Guess I'll go get an exchange. Hopefully I can get the rebate mailed out in time before the 30th D: Hopefully the problem doesn't come back.

Thanks for the help!
