If you can, wait a few months until the 2008 Impreza comes out. The new sedan looks a lot like a small Legacy (and the hatchback looks bit like a Mazda 3), and the WRX version gets the current Legacy GT's engine (which is re-chippable to 300hp easily).

the WRX got the 2.5l engine in 2006, and it is not flashable to 300hp with out mods. That stock turbo isn't that good.

and if you want a impreza, get an STI even if it means going for a slightly used one. Trust me it would be well worth the investment to go up a model.

Still it sounds like the legacy is for you.

Who told you all this? They reflash up to 300hp at the crank all day every day without modding. The 2.0L could hit 300 at the crank with just a reflash and a TBE. The TD04 might be small and somewhat limited, but it still gets the job done.

The STI is a lot more than just more a bigger turbo. A lot lot more.

Just to jump in here my '06 WRX with a Stage 2 flash and only a downpipe dyno's 235hp/285tq at the wheels.

All that costs around $1000 and gets you close to stock STI performance as far as power goes.

I wouldn't touch a used STI with a ten foot pole, way too many videos of idiots doing 6000 rpm clutch dumps.

Personally I am horrified at the new '08's, they are just dreadful to look at, especially the hatch, it's an abomination. Throw in the fact that the new STI will only be in hatchback form and well....my next car might be an Evo.

Subaru's should be ugly, but in an endearing sort of way, not in I have a Chrysler grill and a Corolla body sort of way.

But I digress.

I drove a Mazda 3 and it has a nicer interior but I absolutely hated the electronic shenanigans you have to put up with to avoid torquesteering yourself into the curb and hatch's to me are just FUG.

If you are serious about performance I don't see how you can be looking at FWD, even with all the gizmo's, it's just not the same.

Jeez. IF you want to talk about reflashes and what not, the 2.0T in the A4 is reflashable to about 250HP and 300tq WITHOUT the use of a downpipe or any physical mods.

And? Just confirming Vic's numbers.

Just saying that modding brings in a whole new host of reasons to pick each car!

No doubt.

The Audi is a nice car don't get me wrong, but it's heavier, about $5k more, and considerably slower in stock trim than a WRX.

But the interior is leaps and bounds above the Subie.

Thats all I'm sayin :). And even with all that wonderful luxury bulk you can manage a 6 sec 0-60 bound(when chipped).

Yup, modding and potential is why I love the '03 Cobras. Wicked sick cars. and 500, 600, and 700 horses with basic degrees of mods on the stock factory bullet proofed engine.

Some suggestions for OP:

1) Buy a used car a year old of the same generation that you want. Learn a little about the car you are hunting and learn the signs for abuse, well known issues from the factory, etc. Get one with low miles and owned by the original owner and look for older mature drivers who mostly let it sit in the garage. New cars are a waste of money. Buy a new car and drive it for 1000 miles and guess what you have? A used car! So what there is a wrinkle in the seat, you're going to put one there yourself anyway. Who is gonna know it wasn't new a week ago when you bought it? Not only will you save thousands, but you can even bump up the trim level a notch. Used V8 Mustang GT for the budget of a brand new V6 Mustang, Sti for the price of a brand new plain WRX, etc. The only catch is you have to be familiar with the car you are buying and know how to look it over in detail. Biggest thing is take your time and be patient. Don't rush to buy a car that isn't the one you really want, and don't rush to buy the car you want when you don't know enough about it to be confident checking it out yourself. If it concerns you, look for one being sold by the dealer and still under warranty, old rich people just like to trade in perfectly fine unabused low mileage cars because they think the newer year is automatically better :D

2) If you are seriously in need of wheels at the moment fix your current car or buy a cheap beater for $500 that you can buy outright in cash and save everything else and stay focused, and eat ramen for 6 months to a year. At least put what you expect your new monthly expenses to be into a 'new car' savings. This includes the total sum of the car payment and projected insurance and gas costs every single month. Then go for the car you REALLY want. Not only will you have more cash to put toward the car, you will already be used to the financial hit of the added monthly expenses when you DO get it, and more importantly, you'll know that you can afford it no problem if you felt no pinch 'pretending' for a year. In the mean time, window shop, drool, stay on the hunt to see what price ranges are for various conditions and mileage, and learn every nut and bolt on that car by memory.

It seems like your heart is in the 30k range which is out of your budget right now. Don't jump the gun and compromise with something that will cause you to have a upside down car loan and still have buyers remorse wishing you'd waited a few more months instead of being stuck with 5 years of payments before you can change your mind. What is worse than being patient and saving the cash, is finally having the cash and your day has come, then looking for months and not finding the color, mileage, and location you want. :|

3) If you are going for the WRX, get the Sti and don't look back.
