Its called instead of buying a stupid game for XBOX, go download Stepmainia (www.stepmania.com) and BT for some songs (of dubious legality, unless you own the games). $25 for a USB to PS2 game pad converter, and some money for a decent pad. Red ocatane is good just as long as you don't pay full retail.

is there not stepmania for download with xbox?

we use stepmania (for PC and I love it. We have just over 600 songs. yay

we are working on making metal ddr pads. woo

Yep, Lantus I believe ported stepmania to the xbox.

New URL for Soft Pad FAQ:
http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~balazer/ddr_soft_pad_faq/

I recommend the following:
BNS Ultra-DX Xtreme (around $50)
DDRNation v2.5 (OEM) if you have hard foam (around $35)

PSA: If you use a USB adapter and play over carpet, it is possible (I've done it) to fry both the pad and the adapter with static electricity. This happens if the pad builds up charge while disconnected (e.g. setting up, sliding it on the carpet) and is then plugged into the grounded computer. This is much less of a problem with consoles because they are not grounded and will happily share the electric potential. It takes a good amount of charge to do this, so you don't have to be paranoid, but if the air is particularly dry, it doesn't hurt to bleed off some of the charge, e.g. by holding something grounded and wiping with your other hand.

My friend really likes In the Groove over DDR now, but I haven't tried it myself.

You will not speak ill of the game that makes women jump around scantily clad while drinking, getting sweaty, and falling all over each other. Understood?

it does that?

ill have to remember to get in on this if i ever get another woman....what a fabulous idea.

1. mod your xbox
2. get stepmaniax, xbox port of stepmania
3. go on ebay
4. buy cheap ignition ddr pads
5. buy plastic office mats and cut in shape
6. put in ddr pad to harden them and strengthen them
7. ...
8. profit?

I buy some average pads, get some big pieces of wood and put the pads on those and use industrial plastic wrap to sandwich the pads between the wood and the plastic wrap. Use a staple gun and voila, instant hard pad.

Doing the softpad mod would be good from what I've heard, especially if you're not to the level where you would want the accuracy and feel of a metal pad. If you play songs on Stepmania that have lots of mines in them (like Hard and Expert level songs from In The Groove, a DDR clone with more Westernized music and additional, harder step charts, among other enhancements), though, you may have to worry about the extreme sensitivity of soft pads.

I should really do the same kind of thing, since I haven't been very good about exercising other than my occasional trips to the arcade to play DDR or ITG. My lack of fitness is probably what's keeping me from passing 11- and 12-footers. (I'd go there more often, too, but I'm too young to drive.)

It also causes less...desireable types to jump around sweaty.

I've never played before. I just want something I can play on in my socks or bare feet. Metal pads sound...hard.

And what the heck is an 11-footer? 😕

I love ddr and in my opinion the soft ones are totally useless. They move around too much and even if you mod them with the plywood they still arnt like the arcade at all. I persoannly have a metal red octane one. Its not one of the new Ignition ones but its pretty nice. I got it for 120 bucks at Otakon. Otherwise you woul dhave to pay shipping which pushs the price up a lot

Not only are metal pads hard, the more authentic ones have sheetmetal screws sticking up (their heads) to tear the crap out of your feet. 🙂 Go soft, it will be fine, especially if you're just starting.

Number of feet is the difficulty, I believe 9 was originally the most difficult.

I don't think they should necessarily be compared to each other, soft and hard are like two variations of the same game, though soft is typically more sensitive and thus easier. I can see how someone doing AAA or PA would insist on doing it on an arcade machine for "certifiability".

I have that. It's good for beginners, but when I did heavy on it, it died so fast. I'm getting two ignition ddr pads with foam from ebay.

Nah. You dont want one of those..well if you get one be sure to mod it like the guy said before. Plywood and tape and such. It will be fne for the first few feet songs like up to 6 or so but once you get past that it gets a lot harder. When you use the soft pads on hard songs it moves around too much and you will lose your footing. Also the harder songs require that you move very quickly and the softpads just dont give you any kind of bounce and they are also less accurate becasuse it moves when you hit it.
