I was at work yesterday, and as I walked past the counter, I saw an AmEx black card.

I thought it was an ad or something at first, but as I strolled past I noticed the name on it was Roberto Bonilla.

It kind of made sense. The guy I met was crazy nice and I thought he looked familiar for some reason but I couldn't put my finger on it until I saw the card.

Turns out it was in fact Bobby Bonilla. Having grown up playing baseball, hearing about him and Bonds destroying on the Pirates, and him eventually winning the series on the Marlins, I have to admit I was a little star struck.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Bonilla

Anyways he a geat guy, extremely nice, very personable.

The only other person I met that I can say that is close to being a celebrity, was when I spend 2 days getting drunk with High Pitch Eric.

He's just huge, and disgusting. But he didn't mind saying "Hiiii, I'm Kelly Clarkson!"

Anyone ever run into any celebrities? Who were they and what were your "real life" impressions?

A friend knows one of his good buddies. He came up to Connecticut for New Years, and we hooked up, and spent new years eve, and day drinking.

I don't know if you listen to the Stern show, but if you do, remember how he got in tons of trouble for getting those limos to CT, and then not paying for them? hah that's what he was doing.

He can drink like a million beers. He's absolutely huge and his hands are the size of frying pans. Plus his belly is like the size of a Volkswagen beetle. And his voice easily gets on your nerves after awhile. He's also a texas hold 'em poker player.

He'd wear this tiny blue hat real low and trying to cover his face, like people wouldn't notice the giant in the bar because of it. His clothes all also seemed to be really small.

If I knew he was so deathly afraid of fish at the time, I would have gotten a picture of one and sprung it on him when he wasn't expecting it, but I only found this out afterwards.

His buddy on the other hand was really cool and nice, and cleared the pool table with ease when we were playing. I'm not a bad pool player either, he was just ridiculously good.

I just officially met Paul Sorvino this past Monday. He's a regular where I shoot pool in NYC. He was a rail bird while I was practicing with a semi-pro. Extremely nice guy with great character.

The closest I've been to celebrities:

- Had lunch 2 tables away from Alan Trammel
- Had lunch at a table next to Jeffery Feiger
- Worked for Tony Boles' dad (Tony was a celebrity around Michigan Football before he got hurt in college)
- Am friends with a cousin of Leslie Nielsen

Last week I was in Cedar Rapids, Iowa staying overnight. The WWE was in town and a couple guys were staying at my hotel.

I was at breakfast and this beast lumbered into the breakfast room when I was in there:

He was "Turley" from The Longest Yard. His head almost scraped the ceiling.

Heh..Bobby Bonilla! Truly a favorite with Mets fans. :p

I met the cast of Will and Grace when I was a doorman (creator lived in the building I worked at) and shook hands with a few Mets and Yanks when I went to ballgames. I also met Steve Van Zandt who plays with Bruce Springsteen and is "Silvio" on The Sopranos. We used to hold his packages when he went filming for the show. Nice dude.

About half of the film "Me, Myself and Irene" was filmed in and around my hometown in Vermont. The scene where Jim Carrey throws himself out of the car is just down the street from my old highschool, and the shops that he drives through (as well as the train station) are right in Essex Junction, about a 8 minute drive from where I lived. Bunch of us got used as extras in a few scenes, he came by and said hello, very nice guy, shook our hands and thanked us for helping out, then our shots got cut from the final movie :(

A few years back, I was up in Montreal for a weekend with some friends and we happened to stay at the same hotel as the NY Mets, who were in town for a game with the Expos (pre-Nationals days). We kept running into Mets players around the hotel. Todd Hundley (who I believe had just made the switch to OF after Piazza was acquired) was very friendly. as were a few of the younger OFs - Butch Huskey, McRae(??), and two others (their names escape me now). The funniest part of that weekend was running into Dennis Cook and Turk Wendell in the elevator with my roommate and not knowing their names (I actually didn't even realize they were players). Now, in our defense, we were both Yankees fans. The conversation went something like this:

Me (getting into elevator): How're you guys doing? (Didn't know who they were, just being friendly.)
(Cook & Wendell nod and smile in acknowledgement.)
Buddy (recognizing Wendell): Hey, you pitch for the Mets don't you?
Turk: Yeah, actually we both do.
Buddy (now recognizing Cook): Oh yeah, you're Danny Cook?
Cook: Actually, Dennis, but close enough.
(Elevator arrives on ground floor.)
Cook: See you guys around.
Buddy and I (sheepishly): Nice meeting you guys. Good luck this weekend.

The only player who was completely unfriendly was John Franco, who was kind of an ass. Another buddy, who was a Met's fan, greeted him and offered him a handshake, which he refused. He also didn't acknowledge anyone else talking to him or waving hello.

Dick Dale

My sophomore year at college a few friends and I drove down to Birmingham to see Dick Dale. It was at some ratty little bar under the interstate. I was only 19 at the time and so was one of the friends I was with. We were not permitted in the bar so we pretty much just loitered there out front on about the coldest night of the year.

There was some crappy house music playing that we could just barely hear. We were afraid we wouldn't be able to hear the king of the surf guitar. Ha! Anyway we were outside all alone and this guy emerges from the bar with a radio and says something into it. A few seconds later a white Suburban rounds the corner and parks right in front of us. Mr. Dale emerges and he is handed his guitar. At this point my friend and I are . He plays a small little riff that my friend and I were the only audience to. He says, "Sometimes I wish there were two of me." We were able to mutter something but I don't really remember. He plugs in the guitar (wireless transmitter) and lets loose. The crowd inside went wild and let me tell you the volume was such that we had no problem hearing it. :D
