The mystery device is actually just an old heat gun. I was playing around with a bunch of scrap/trash to see if I could make a nozzle that would focus the hot air into a smaller beam suitable for electronics work. I couldn't use solder, glue, or tape to adhere the nozzle to the gun, because the heat would make the whole thing just melt apart. No welding equip or thermal epoxy, either. Hence the giant clamp, castle nut, and wire to keep it all together. The small brass-colored nozzle is actually spring-mounted, too, so my clumsy hands won't bludgeon any circuits to death.

And yes, I realize I would have been better off just buying a new purpose-built heat gun... but then I wouldn't have had anything to entertain myself with.
