So I made an employee at work cry

Chaotic42

Lifer
Our project has a scanner in the office I'm in. Usually only we use it, but sometimes other projects do. Now I'm a really sarcastic person. Horribly sarcastic. So I come back from lunch and someone from another project was using it. She used to work the same shift as me, and I used to mess with her about using the scanner all of the time.

So I come in and say "Hey, that's *our* scanner!". She said it was for everyone, and I said if it was for everyone, it wouldn't be in our office. She walked out and I didn't think anything of it.

A few minutes later her manager comes in and asks me what happened because the woman is in tears and is cussing a blue streak. It turns out that apparently she thought I was yelling at her for using the scanner.

Fortunately I think everything is straightened out, but it really shocked the hell out of me.

Just remember to be careful about what you say at work, even if you're only joking. 🙂

That's sexual harassment!

And she doesn't have to take it!

In all seriousness, though, even the way you typed it doesn't sound like you were kidding.

I doubt the company is gonna think its funny.
Probably not. I appologized and explained that I was just joking with her. I think we're cool now. I felt really bad about it.

Now whether the *company* and I are cool... I don't know. I think everyone was okay. If not, hey, it's not that hard to match my income around here. I don't think it will come to that though. 😉

Hmmm, hostile workplace...I see a lawsuit in the future...

Of course, you being in Mississippi, one of the few states that doesn't have it's own State office of Civil Rights...that means she'd have to meet the Federal standards for harassment...

Heh, nah, I think I'm going to re-evalutate my joking around with people. Not only because it might get me in trouble, but because I apparently hurt someone that I thought I was friends with.

Nah. We're a pretty resilient bunch.

I may get in trouble, I don't know. No one seemed really worked up about it, even the woman. We were joking around (both of us 😛) an hour later. But, whatever. If I get called into the president's office or whatever, I'll just tell the truth. If I get fired or whatever, so be it. I'm not going to lie.

I think you need to smooth it over with her - walk up behind her and start giving her a backrub - she'll appreciate it.

The ultimate burn! I thought it might be a good lesson to the other office clowns. 😀

I agree that if you play your cards right - you could turn this into a positive for yourself, Chaotic42. This will show that you're a team player, that you respect this woman, and that there is nothing more important than a tension-free workplace. Look, everyone makes mistakes at work, from the custodian to the CEO, but it takes a true leader to fix the problem the right way.

Plus you'll have more enjoyable evenings in bed.

Meh, I'd say everything's fine now that she knows you were just kidding. The crying part probably was brought on because someone she thought of as a friend was being mean to her for no apparent reason and it hurt her feelings.
