two years ago yesterday, the big blackout of nyc occurred. i was in manhattan, and it sucked.
i remember not knowing what was going on, simply because i thought the power in my building went out and they'd restore it soon. i remember checking the circuit breakers and making sure everything was ok (they were). about an hour after sitting and doing nothing, i looked outside and my entire floor was pitch black with the exception of the emergency lights. i heard people down the hall and they told us that "the entire city is dark. guiliani made an announcement."
so i decided to leave my apartment, go down 7 flights of pitch black stairs, and i walked outside. it was packed with people. many folks were getting last-minute emergency items at the drugstores, and some restaurants took advantage of selling food on the sidewalk (there were long lines). since the lights were off, few people were let into stores at a time, and most stores closed very early. it was insane.
so i ended up going to a friend's for awhile, but it was too hot and humid to do much (and air conditioning was not an option). i eventually walked home when it got dark, trekked up the 7 flights of stairs in even greater darkness, and sat at home, wondering what to do. it sucked. it was hot and disgusting and i couldn't think of viable options since i didn't even have a decent flashlight.
fortunately, i found that my ibook had some battery power left, so i played on it for awhile and it kept me busy. nowadays, i turn to my treo650 when i get bored.
sleep is good if it's not too hot and sticky -- water is good too (shower for 2 hours to kill time). or yeah, you can read stuff like harry potter
