So I lost power for over 7 hours...

Our power was out for a total of 11 days during last year's hurricane season. 7 hours? Hell, that's a nap.

Read or go to a friend's house.

lol, we have blackouts pretty regularly in country WA, but when i was a kid growing up in the Solomon Islands we usually spent a reasonable portion of each day without either power or water 😛 Mind you cold showers were very pleasant indeed in those temperatures...

I have a Laptop as well as 3 UPS's (though all are actually in use). At the very least, if i Really wanted to, I could watch DVDs on my lappie for the entire duration of time.

mind giving me one of those ups's? 😀

The GMC van has a TV in it. I go out and watch that. Or I pick another random vehicle and jack the laptop into an inverter. Last time, though, I realized that I don't have anything on the laptop to do 😛

Failing electronic gadgetry in cars, though, I like to drive. Driving is fun. But then, it's not particularly hard to do around here when the power's out. We only have one stoplight and people understand how to use it without power.

I actually don't have enough as it is ...
I tend to get lots of power surges here, so I've got one for my Stereo Reciever, one for my server, and one for my Cable Modem, Alarmclock, and server monitor. I want 2 more, just so I have my other two boxes covered ..... ohh well

two years ago yesterday, the big blackout of nyc occurred. i was in manhattan, and it sucked.

i remember not knowing what was going on, simply because i thought the power in my building went out and they'd restore it soon. i remember checking the circuit breakers and making sure everything was ok (they were). about an hour after sitting and doing nothing, i looked outside and my entire floor was pitch black with the exception of the emergency lights. i heard people down the hall and they told us that "the entire city is dark. guiliani made an announcement."

so i decided to leave my apartment, go down 7 flights of pitch black stairs, and i walked outside. it was packed with people. many folks were getting last-minute emergency items at the drugstores, and some restaurants took advantage of selling food on the sidewalk (there were long lines). since the lights were off, few people were let into stores at a time, and most stores closed very early. it was insane.

so i ended up going to a friend's for awhile, but it was too hot and humid to do much (and air conditioning was not an option). i eventually walked home when it got dark, trekked up the 7 flights of stairs in even greater darkness, and sat at home, wondering what to do. it sucked. it was hot and disgusting and i couldn't think of viable options since i didn't even have a decent flashlight.

fortunately, i found that my ibook had some battery power left, so i played on it for awhile and it kept me busy. nowadays, i turn to my treo650 when i get bored.

sleep is good if it's not too hot and sticky -- water is good too (shower for 2 hours to kill time). or yeah, you can read stuff like harry potter 😉
