Lost my debit card.. went to buy the new GTA:SA for PC from BestBuy, went to the checkout... it wasn't in my wallet.

go home, frantically search for it.. can't find it. cuss a few times, go to the bank's website, find an after-hour emergency number, report it stolen... they put a block on it, can't be used.

Last I remember using it was Saturday at an ATM, took $20 out. Discovered it hour and a half ago, reported it a half hour ago.

Now to the big question.. am I liable for any charges? there is only around $300 in my account, but its money I can't really afford to lose.

(edited because apparantly its debit not debt.)

Well, Debits usually require a pin number. Easy enough to tell the cashier that its a credit card tho. I dunno. Most banks have a funds replacement policy for stolen cards. The big question is how long it takes for them to put the money back.

Do you have online banking with this card? If there are no pending charges or unfamliar charges then you are probablly ok.

You can't afford to lose $300, but you can afford a $50 PC game?

If your debit card has the Visa or MasterCard logo and you report it as lost/stolen within 24 hours, then your liability is zero.

Then it makes it a CREDIT CARD, not a debit card.

I believe it can also be a check card... (which seems more likely considering the situation)

If it is a check card, I believe VISA gives you zero liability with regards to credit card purchases.

If the card is indeed stolen and the pin number is with it, Reg E says that if you report the card within 48 hours, your maximum liability is $50, with regards to debit purchases. your banks policy, however, may work to your favor even more. Although if the pin number is on the card, you're just a dumbass. After the 48 hour period I forget what your maximum liability becomes.

Did you try calling the branch where you used it to find out if you left it in the machine and it got sucked in?

Gotta entertain myself sometimes. Last game I bought was in december, HL2. The money is better spent paying off my ~$4000 car loan, but this is a game i couldnt pass up :)

Actually my mom forgot hers in an ATM one time and she just went to the bank the next day and they had a whole stack that people had forgotten. SO might wanna go check with the bank. That is if it was the kind of ATM that you insert the card into.

I have a debit card with a Visa logo. It's not a credit card. I don't pay interest on anything and the money comes right out of my bank account when I use it. That's a debit card.

Legally, banks can make you liable for it (which is why a credit card is better, legally you cannot be liable for those charges on a credit card). However, many banks choose to offer some form of protection. Often they voluntarilly make you liable for only $50 (even $0 in some cases). But, the problem is the money is out of your account until you prove it was stolen and which charges are false. With a credit card, you get the money back instantly. So
a) $200 out now to possibly get it back more in days/weeks/months to come, or
b) you are never out money.
I choose option (b). One more reason to use a credit card and not to carry a debit card.

Wrong bucko......if your debit card is VISA or MC logo'd, then you are NOT LIABLE for any fraudulent charges placed on the card if, and a BIG IF, you report it missing/stolen within 24 hours of it being discovered missing/stolen. Don't you watch TV and the VISA/MC debit protection commericals? You know, the ones with Spiderman, Thor, et al? YOU ARE COMPLETELY PROTECTED IF IT'S LOGO'D.
