Here's what you do:

1) File a complaint with USPS. Since you used them to ship the item, it's is now a case of mail fraud.

2) Call back whatvewr PD you called and gently remind them that any theft over $300 in damages is a felony in most every juristdiction, and kindly ask them to get off their asses.

3) Should they refuse, call local FBI field office. Since money/goods crossed state lines, they may get involved.

If they attempt to send it to collection send a written letter to the collection agency telling them never to contact you again. If they attempt to put it on your credit report protest it as a violation of the fair credit reporting act (they never gave you credit).

FTW!

was it known to you that the adress was only a P.O. box ?

Also...what ebay feedbacks etc. did the buyer have ?

If you sold to an unconfirmed adress, knowing maybe that it was only some shady P.O. box and the guy didnt have at least a history of positive feedback....and then do business with such a person... And $750 is a lot of money too. I think you were seriously lacking comon sense there...

I didn't know it was a P.O. Box.

And I only shipped because I was paid right away, and I immediately moved the money to my bank account, which I still have sitting there.
I just didn't know it was possible to reverse a payment, or that it was even legal to do such thing!

i thought unconfirmed was that there's no real bank account linked to the address?

Nope...confirmed account is two fold. CC Billing address must match the address you gave, and the bank account linked(if any) must be confirmed(two small deposits, verify amounts). I'm screwed by the people who want only confirmed addresses since I'm 18 and I've got a 10,000CAD loan, am not a student, and don't make the 12k/year required for a credit card up here in Canada.

Sorry to the OP for getting pwned, but if it is a bank account payment/e-check, wait until you get the 'Payment cleared/complete' email, just like if you got a check from someone(to make sure it doesn't bounce/NSF). Once that happens, they cannot revoke the money anymore AFAIK. PayPal is annoying for me though...the money vanishes from my account 2 days after I pay, but I have to wait 10 days before it actually clears. The bastards are making money from me in interest that entire time.
huh? since when did you need to make 12k/year to get a credit card?

Yeah. I'm sure the FBI will give it their undivided attention.

Ouch. I'd never, ever, even if the guy sent me the money first, send to an unconfirmed address. That's where you burnt yourself. It's going to be hard to get that money back but I hope you're able to find that thief and get your money back.

Ebay is full of scumbags. The best lesson you can learn here is don't do business on Ebay.

A lot of companies list it as a requirement for getting their cards these days. Although this is not the case for all card.

Sucky situation, but you definately went against what is considered ebay and paypals seller protection, which is just simply ONLY shipping to confirmmed shipping addresses. I use to be a powerseller on ebay and would sell $700-$1200 items all the time. Honestly.... half the time people would use the buy it now feature without a confirmmed shipping addresss. I had a template e-mail to send these people, and I would hold their money that they sent with their unconfirmmed paypal account until they contacted me back. Out of probably 10 people, only one person said "sorry" and send a money order. The other 9 said "alright, I dont want the item anymore."

Ebay is full of scam artists, because sadly, most people feel that if they can get away with it, they are going to try it. It only takes a few stupid people a day to *STEAL* $1000's worth of goods everyday. It is just pathetic, and these people will get what is coming to them. They are the same idiots that get your FX-55, and sell it to a pawn shop for $50, for a $50 profit, while you take a $750 hit. Complete losers, and honestly, ebay and paypal will NOT do a single thing for you. I try to stay as far away from selling on ebay and using paypal as I can now-days. The fee's.... oh my

From someone who has dealt with this kind of thing before:

1)You haven't lost any money yet. Your PayPal account is in the red, which means DON'T EVER USE IT AGAIN.

2)PayPal cannot charge your credit card or bank account for the balance, so don't worry if you had those items attached to your PayPal account.

3)What PayPal CAN do is e-mail you to pay up. After a while, they MIGHT send the amount to collections, but that is spotty at best.

4)If the item is sent to collections (probably NCO, whom eBay and PayPal use), then your credit may or may not be affected.

5)My PayPal account had a similar negative balance to yours. The amount was never sent to collections, and I didn't hear about it by e-mail after 6 months.

6)Create new PayPal accounts at your own risk. eBay and PayPal are pretty damn good at detecting multiple accounts from the same user, so don't be surprised if any new PayPal accounts you create are "limited" (meaning your money is frozen for 6 months) soon after they carry a balance.

7)It was indeed entirely your fault for not shipping to a confirmed address, but you were smart enough to wait until the payment hit your bank account, which saved you from truly losing $750.

8)Your eBay account may or may not be affected by this. There are some unconfirmed cases of eBay accounts being suspended due to negative PayPal balances, but in my case the account was kept active.

For future reference, only accept PayPal from domestic verified users and only ship to their verified address. International payments should ALWAYS be done with BidPay. If you accept payment by mail, make sure it is postal money orders or major national bank certified checks only (no personal or business checks).

Thank you all for your comments.

I realize it was my fault for shipping to the unconfirmed address.
I guess I had to learn the hard way!

I hope this serves as an example to any of you who might be involved in similar circumstances!

Talk to your bank and see what they say. I agree that if Paypal took the card and passed the money on to you, they should be using a better front end that checks for stolen credit cards and cerifys the info.
